6 more NFL players opt out of season as COVID-19 outbreak strikes MLB

On the same day MLB saw a COVID-19 outbreak, several NFL players have opted out of the upcoming season.

The Baltimore Ravens announced on Monday that wide receiver and return specialist De'Anthony Thomas has been added to the team’s reserve list as a voluntary opt-out. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports that Seattle Seahawks guard Chance Warmack and Cowboys corner back Maurice Canady will also exercise their options to opt out for the season. New England Patriots fullback Danny Vitale is also opting out, according to his agent. As is Patriots guard Najee Toran, according to the Boston Globe.

Meanwhile Washington defensive end Caleb Brantley was granted a “high-risk” opt-out, a designation that allows him to collect a $350,000 stipend and an accrued season. Players not granted the designation receive a $150,000 advance on their 2021 contracts and don’t accrue a season. Why Brantley was granted the waiver is not clear.

They all join Kansas City Chiefs lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who on Friday became the first NFL player to opt out of the season amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The players who opted out Monday have not publicly spoken about their decisions.

These wusses should leave the country, head to Europe, and pick up soccer or tennis! Amirite Mike?

I wonder if in addition to the Covid-19 test, they are also doing the anti-body test to see who has had it and already recovered.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew II has been placed on the NFL's Reserve/Covid-19 list by his team. This move does not necessarily indicate that Minshew himself has tested positive for Covid-19.
Four more Jaguars players were also placed on the Reserve/Covid-19 list. Those players are:
  • Running back Ryquell Armstead
  • Tight end Charles Jones
  • Wide receiver Michael Walker
  • Safety Andrew Wingard.
The NFL describes the Reserve/COVID-19 category as a roster status created for a player who either tests positive for Covid-19 or who has been quarantined after having been in close contact with an infected person or persons.

Mathew Stafford has been placed on the same list for the Lions.

Major conferences getting ready to cancel the college football season, however, I do hear the option for playing in the spring is still open. After March Madness supposedly.

I don't see how spring football would work. Then what, have no turnaround time and almost straight into fall 2021 season?

also, anyone who would be drafted in 2021 will not be playing during a spring season, even if the draft is moved later.

I have no idea how that's supposed to work, but I've read it a few times. You're right about the turn around time, so I'm guessing I'd have to be a shortened season...maybe like conference games only. IDK.

RIP DraftKings stock....lol...today's losses is based on the rumors of NCAA cancellation this morning, and a few conferences saying their cancelling.

Yeah, it looks like the Big Ten is cancelling their season. The other power five conferences are likely to follow. Big thumbs up to all the patriots out there for not following basic health guidelines because of their "fReEdUm".

In all seriousness there has been a serious loss of wealth generation this year. People poo poo it, but there will be still and has already been consequences for millions of people of quarantines and shut downs.

They are not without consequence. It is all ripples in a large pond and few people see big pictures.

Govt. can't just pay people not to work for forever. 1000s of small businesses have been destroyed.

If we had acted responsibly like many other countries (New Zealand, South Korea, etc,) we could have stopped the virus at a very early stage, saving lives and avoiding the shutdown of our economy. Too bad we chose not to the the right thing at the right time.

Phase 2 is the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 16th. Will the Bears be doing full OTA style practices all four days, or just the 14th and 16th?

I read somewhere that the QB competition starts Friday, so I'm guessing the full practice starts then, and the others are more like team conditioning.
