Say Bears are sitting at #3 pick next season...

I think this is right. Don't think we'll have a top 3-4 pick and Fields is bound to have a few decent-to-good games at some point. If Fields and the Bears are both bad again in 2023, then all bets are off and it's time to start watching tape of Caleb Williams.

Further to your point about responsibility for sacks, the PFF guys said on this week's review podcast that they (PFF) credited 3 of Fields' 6 sacks against the Giants to him and the other 3 to the line. Not sure how they do that or whether that's correct or not, but thought I'd share.

I think if you put this version of Fields on the 2018 Bears, Fields could probably give you a reasonable facsimile of the "Pro Bowl" numbers Mitch up that year. We never really saw Mitch with a supporting cast as thin and non-existent as Fields has to deal with this year. They share many of...

    Knowledge > Narrative

Our line stinks, our receivers stink, and Fields holds onto the ball too long, has poor pocket presence, and generally has not played well. Not hard to understand.

Say Bears are sitting at #3 pick next season...

Definitely would be a tough decision to make if Young, Stroud, and Levis were all sitting there available at #3, but that doesn't just depend on what the Bears think of Fields. It also depends on what they think of those 3 guys and whether any of them are worth taking in lieu of giving Fields...

Too the Fields haters...please stfu now

Yea, my high-level takeaway is that it's too soon to label him a bust, but the degree to which his current struggles line up with the negatives identified in his pre-draft scouting report should be serious cause for concern. Learning how to read defenses, throw with anticipation, quickly go...

    Fields Honest Assessment Of Performance

O line stunk but Fields has *got* to get the ball out quicker. A lot of those sacks were at least partially (if not primarily) on him, his internal clock is way too slow and he can’t sit and hold the ball in the pocket for 4 seconds and not expect to get sacked.

Think we pull this one out somehow.

    Justin Feilds/Jalen Hurts

Yea, for whatever reason OSU quarterbacks just haven't panned out at all at the next level. Not sure if there's any predictive value in that for purposes of scouting CJ Stroud or future OSU quarterbacks, but purely looking at it retrospectively, it's definitely real. Part of me wants to say...

    Fields Honest Assessment Of Performance

Saw someone post on Twitter that per Pro Football Focus, the Bears' wide receivers have the 3rd worst open rate in the league, ahead of only the Saints and one other team (I think maybe the Panthers, but may be misremembering). It's hard to argue the lack of quality WRs is certainly not helping...

Sometimes a Bears win can feel like a loss

Yea, maybe take it down a notch on the cross-out trick next time.

Is defense making a comeback in the NFL?

Think this is mostly just an artifact of (1) a shorter preseason plus (2) starters getting fewer and fewer meaningful reps in training camp and in preseason for purposes of injury avoidance, taking the long view of a 17-game season, etc.

    Do you miss Mitch?

Yea, no way is Mitch in the top-half of the league among starting quarterbacks. At this point in time, he's playing better or arguably better than Fields, Daniel Jones, Zach Wilson*, Davis Mills, Cooper Rush, and maybe 1-2 others...but that's about it. * I'm assuming that once Zach Wilson...

    Sure, why the heck not.

    Justin Feilds/Jalen Hurts

Both good points. That is still, at least to me, why the second half play calling and the last drive of the Green Bay game were so concerning. Not sure we could rack up easy garbage time passing numbers even if we wanted to.

    Do you miss Mitch?

No. He wasn't the guy and it was time to move on. Yes, we're 2-1 with a cake schedule such that we could probably eke out a playoff spot with league-average quarterback play (which we're not getting), but chasing .500 records and one-and-done playoff appearances was sort of the problem in the...

If the Oline is so bad then….

Saw on Twitter that per ProFootballFocus, our offensive line is currently ranked 2nd in run blocking and 22nd in pass blocking. 22nd is bad (obviously), but let's not act like it's solely to blame for what we're watching.

    Justin Feilds/Jalen Hurts

Here are Jalen Hurts' numbers from his first 4 starts of his second season (2021) -- 27/35 for 264 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs 12/23 for 190 yards, 0 TDs, 0 INTs 25/39 for 326 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs 32/48 for 387 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs Now, to be fair, his numbers got significantly worse as that season...

If the Oline is so bad then….

Think that (1) the O-line being appreciably worse at pass blocking than run blocking, and (2) Fields holding onto the ball too long are connected and not mutually exclusive. That is, our line is awesome at run blocking. Our line is not awesome at pass blocking. And going back to college...
