Any team that wins a title is never "just" one player, but I think the sentiment they're going for here is that usually you need a superstar (ie Dirk, Hakeem, Giannis, etc) and then a sidekick (ie AD, Kyrie, Klay Thompson) who is a star in his own right, but not always a superstar. Bucks had that in Holiday/Middleton. Dirk had a solid cast around him, but not another true star. Same with Hakeem on that team. In those cases the rest of the team adds up to the #2 production wise, but there's not a good answer for who the #2 is. In that sense, it would be "just" the superstar, in terms of leading the team

yeah, it’s just kinda funny/ironic with Houston…two or 3 years later they had Hakeem, Barkley, and drexler…3 hall of fame players…kinda a superstar trio before lebron, wade, bosh(granted a lot older)…and that Houston team couldn’t even make it to the finals, but the Houston team with Hakeem and really good role players won it all

jason terry was probably the number 2 behind dirk in those finals. He played really really well but for sure not a guy you think of as a true #2 guy

94 rockets were a lot more than just Olajuwon.
sam cassell, Kenny smith, Vernon maxwell, Robert horry, Otis Thorpe, and Mario Elie. Maxwell and Thorpe were probably the most productive after Hakeem so sure not anything to get excited about as a #2, but they had 6 really good players with Hakeem

so while I agree not much there as a “dominant #2” type guy, to say basically just Olajuwon is a lil misleading as well
The 94 Rockets are excellent role players, but in terms in stars, there are no others on that team.

It's also a one in ten shot basically.

The team with the best record that year, the Sonics, who had a superstar PG, and a very good All-Star in Kemp, choked themselves and lost in the first round. The Rockets had a hell of a series against Phoenix, but pulled it out in the end. They then manhandled Malone & Stockton in the WCF (the Jazz had become fairly well known for failing in the playoffs at this point). In the Finals, the Rockets played a team similar to theirs. Patrick Ewing and then John Starks only All-Star appearance. And it ended up a 7 game series battle.

Of course this can be said for a lot of champions, but 9/10 times a champion has a superstar and then another All-Star, if not two.

The 2004 Pistons are really the weakest team to ever win a title in terms of star power that particular season. Billups and Hamilton would later make All-Star teams, but they didn't that particular year or even the next year when DET returned to the Finals.

The only other team to win a title without a super star since the ABA merger was the 1979 Sonics who had Jack Sikma and Dennis Johnson as their All-Stars. Lesser stars for sure.

That's why I always hated it when Bulls fans would use the 04 Pistons as proof that something like them can happen. Yeah, they happened. It happened a whole 1 time in the NBA. It hasn't happened again since.

And for technical purposes, the 2014 Spurs only star that year was Tony Parker, but Kawhi certainly had his superstar coming out party in the NBA Finals.

It also had allot to do with a weak east and Lakers imploding. The Pacers would have likely beat them that next season if it wasn't for the brawl.

Yep, and weak East is a pretty common thing from 1998-2018.

its a really poorly constructed roster IMO. Most the guys on the team all do the same thing. It’s great we have some of the best scorers in the game on the team…problem is that’s all they have. They have to try and out score everyone, and they aren’t able to

Zion should have been put on the team. Not even being a homer. He doesnt need to shoot and he is to quick for any bigs and to strong. He can also score when your shooting is trash.

At some point, every team trades a star to LA Lakers, and gets nothing in return that makes them better.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Granted, Westbrook is no sporng chicken, so the Wizards aren't hurt. But LA will win next year's title. (If they can overcome the "Russell Westbrook is on your team so you're doomed" thing.

As an Illini fan, I'm happy the Bulls selected Ayo, but he doesn't solve their PG issues. I'm still hoping for Lonzo. I hope the Ayo selection means they can get rid of a Denzel Valentine.
