A.J. instead of Barrett? I would have taken that.

The Twins made the right call on the deal, but you have to remember that Cruz and Wellemeyer were pretty highly thought of arms back then. Some of the luster had worn off of Cruz, but yeah that certainly would have been another one of Hendry's good trades if it happened.

Soo.. basically.. This non-trade may have put us over the top in 2004.

Oh well.

yeah but you never know. maybe yes, or maybe no.....it worked out in our favor that he had issues with tomko

Well I'm just looking at it from the stance of comparing to Barrett..

2004

Barrett and Pierz pretty much equal offense

Pierz way better defensively and pitch calling.

Damn.. I'm actually kinda spooked up right now.

Unless AJ was going to make it so LaTroy Hawkins didn't blow up at the end of the season in '04, I don't think he makes a difference then. Barrett was pretty solid offensively in 04 so I don't think he would have made that much difference. He would have added a solid left handed bat to the lineup so that would have been a plus, but ultimately the answer is we will never know.

I don't think it would've been more than a 2-5 win difference

It might also have helped if 40% of the rotation hadn't broken.

What I got out of that article is the only way I would play for the Cubs is if there was absolutely no choice. :)

You mean the year after they almost won?

Most players would be very apt to playing as a Cub at that point.

So lets recap:
1) The Cubs came close to getting AJ which would have made this a better team.
2) AJ says things to placate his fanbase.

That about cover it

I think AJ has a genuine hatred for the Cubs. Like I do. But if the Cubs want to hire me to be a score keeper, guess what? I have a new job. :)

I am sure he does have a genuine hate for them right now, but as you said...

While I doubt the Cubs would be signing a catcher in his 30s anytime soon, I have no doubts that if the Cubs offered the most money that he would gladly put on the Cubbie blue.
