How can a deal be in place?

Isn't that the definition of tampering?

Trade, not signing.

But it can't be announced/official for weeks.

Well, Smith is owed $17 million and they didn't cut him.

He has one year remaining on his contract, so they are trading before FA. Reportedly getting back "a player and picks", per Ian Rappaport.

Not good for Bears in terms of trade potential. But it means Cousins is gone, which could be good for Bears.

Weird trade for Washington to make imo.

It's the best they could do once they realized Cousins wont be coming back.

But he's 34 and an FA after this year. Seems weird to give up a premium pick, when you could just use that pick on a QB. They aren't on the verge of a super bowl.

If The Browns, Jets or Broncos sign Cousins, that's one less quality non QB available to choose from at 8. not a good thing.

You thought they were just going to sit their #10 pick on the bench for a few more years?

They just got a second rounder for Alex Smith if what Windy says is correct. They won this this trade big time.

KC fleecing WAS if true. They got Smith at age 28 for 2 3rds, use up his prime, and trade him in the last year of his contract for a 2nd and a player.

correction:

When the San Francisco 49ers traded Alex Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs for two second-round picks last March, many came to the conclusion that Kansas City gave up way too much for a serviceable starting quarterback.
