Have you guys ever seen or been involved in one? I was pretty close today.

My daughter and this other girl on her team don't get along. We all know it. We've told our daughter eleventy billion times to stay away from the girl. It's both of their faults. They both talk trash constantly.

So the girl comes over to my wife after the game and is like "I need to talk to you right now!!" To my wife. My wife is like ok we can talk but you don't talk to me that way. Then her dad rushes over and shoves his finger in my daughter's face yelling how she talks trash to his daughter.

He's right beside me so I say you need to put your hand down. My wife tells him to stop pointing his finger in her face and he turns it to her and says he'll point his finger at whom ever he wants. (He didn't say whom but whatever)

So I then start turning my body toward him as to square up and I say boy you need to back up. He put his hand down and was much calmer after that.

There were like tee-ball kids everywhere as well as the team and other parents. I would have felt like an ass if I would have swung on the guy but in that moment I was very close. Not once did he even look at me or address me the entire time.

Luckily my wife is a counselor and freaking amazing at handling tense situations. Because it wall all instinct on my part. I just saw grown man in a threatening posture to my wife and daughter.

When I was playing peewee football the mother of one of my teammates (who was terrible) came up to one of my coaches to complain about her kid not getting enough playing time and was super rude about it. Coach called her a "crazy bitch" (they, seriously, made playing time as equal for all the kids as they possibly could despite skill level [all stars would be reserves for a number of games every season and all that]) and went frickin off on her. We generally thought it was hilarious since none of us liked her, but of course coach was forced to apologize and give us the "that's not how you talk to people, I shouldn't have said that" speech. Good times.

Parents definitely get way too fucking worked up over their kids playing little league or peewee or whatnot. Dude, your fucking kid isn't going to be the next Gretzky or Brady or Ruth...calm the fuck down.

I referee football, so I see this all the time. I've seen parents get into fist fights over the dumbest shit. My crew and myself had to be escorted to our cars by the police because we were being threatened. I had a referee I was working with had a bottle (not glass, but whatever) thrown at him. I've seen a parent run across the field to go after a coach because he thought the other team was dirty.

Shit gets wild.

I should also say that both our daughters are in high school playing their softball game at a park where there were also tee-ball games going on. Not that they were tee ball players.

They're teammates? And trash talking? Age? Sport?

Good for you controlling yourself though.

They are 15ish. Idk the other girls age but it's around that. High school softball. They girls hate each other. At school at softball, it's always something.

We have told ours tons of times to stop engaging but can't seem to get through.

So anybody ever seen adults fighting at sporting events. I've heard stories but this was as close as I've ever been to even seeing one.

My Dad covered this when I was a kid.

He told me not to talk trash, and if I did, I deserved whatever I got in return. (which happened a few times)
If the situation ever arose where a parent was laying in to me, I was to ignore them and walk to the coach and alert him. (which happened a few times)
If the coach did nothing, then my dad would come down to engage the parent. (never happened).

The worst I was ever chewed out was by a parent of a team mate. I got my helmet ripped off on the field and fumbled the ball. Being stupid and mad at myself, I kicked my helmet and it bounced off the head of one of the guys on the sideline.
Coach yelled at me, The kids mom yelled at me, and my dad just watched.
Going home he said "you know you deserved that, don't you?" I said yes. He told me "if you do that again, that means you cannot control your temper. If you cannot control your temper, You should no longer play the game".
Awesome teaching moment.

People are stupid and do stupid things. My Father realized that and prepared me for it so I did not react stupidly. (not saying you or your child did).

I know my daughter isn't easy to get along with. She is very defensive over small things and argues over stupid stuff. The other girl said my daughter said she sucked at batting in class today. I could see my daughter saying that in response to something but I also would have gotten a text from the teacher if she had done that. I'm very aware my kid can be a jerk but I'm also aware it's a defense mechanism that we are working on.

I see more at baseball games. Nothing memorable - just pushing and few punches thrown here or there.

I watched an interview with Jason Day. He said if he hit a bad shot his Dad would floor him at the course. Said he was a mean drunk.

Now he's number one in the world...

I have no idea what my point is... Just thought of it when reading about kids, parents and sports.

At some point, someone has to be the adult in those situations and take charge and deescalate, regardless of pride. Sounds like your wife stepped up. Could be a keeper.
