BOURBONNAIS -- The Bears have released punter Richmond McGee to make room for new defensive end Maurice Evans.
Evans, an undrafted free agent from Penn State, was signed Wednesday morning so the Bears could get a look at a player who had 12 sacks as a sophomore in 2007. He wasn't as productive during his junior season and made the mistake of leaving school early. Evans first signed with the New York Giants after the draft last year and spent much of the season on the practice squad of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McGee was a camp leg. Veteran punter Brad Maynard feeling much better following arthroscopic hip surgery in January, a procedure in which he had a bone spur shaved down, his labrum repaired and a torn tendon reattached. Maynard struggled to practice much the last four seasons because of what the team believed was a groin injury. Now healthy, he can get the work done in camp that was needed and McGee was expendable.
The Bears first brought McGee in last summer and then they signed him at the end of the season and carried him on the 80-man roster during the offseason.
