Bear's draft, FA signings should have one goal: beating Green Bay

Next season, the Bears are going to lose a bunch of non-conference games to the good AFC teams on their schedule. Given the strong NFC South and West, the Bears will not make the playoffs as a wild card.

Their focus should be entirely on beating Green Bay to win the Central division - even if the Bears win less than 10 games overall.

In baseball, teams build lineups to counter the strengths and exploit the weaknesses of the league leader - think Yankees and Red Sox.

What are the strengths/weaknesses of the Packers?

What can the Bears do in this draft and FA to build a team that can - if nothing else - be competitive with the Packers in 2021?

What offensive/defensive scheme changes would be effective against the Packers, and what new players would be needed?

I think that's what the Quinn signing was. To beat Rogers you need to be able to pressure him quickly with your base rush and play coverage. If you blitz he'll find the open guy and if he has time someone will get open.

It was.

And it backfired hard....But yes, the only way to beat IMO the qb with the most smarts and skills in nfl history(Sorry patty) is to get to him quick.

The problem here is that the Packers offensive line has basically free license to hold in order to protect Rodgers. Also anyone who lays a finger on him draws fifteen yards no questions asked.

The best way to really beat him now that he's become this treasured asset feverishly defended by league officials is just to keep the ball out of his hands or get him frustrated. When his teammates let him down he gets nasty and emotional and sometimes the Packers just broadly give up when Rodgers is in the midst of his one of his particularly dour sulks.

Eh. The Steelers lost 5 of their last 6 games. Browns were good for the first time in over 20 years, not a foregone conclusion they do it twice in a row. Brees is retiring from the NFC South. Tampa has a bunch of FAs and a QB who will be 44. Basically saying, stop counting losses before they even happen. The actual order of the schedule matters too. Nobody thought the Bears would beat Tampa this year. You never know when a team has to travel across the country on a short week, what injuries they'll have and when, might get a warm weather team in Chicago in December. You just dont know.

Also, F the Packers. Get a team that can beat anyone they play. I don't care if they got 14-2 with 2 losses to the Packers, just like I'll be pissed if they got 2-14 and only beat the Packers twice because that's not good enough.

Then maybe the Bears should increase time of possession by improving the running game against Green Bay's mediocre run defense with a better OL, a big north-south RB, a real blocking FB and perhaps a second blocking TE.

Also, perhaps they should acquire better CBs and safeties to help produce more coverage sacks and INTs by Rogers.

These personnel moves might be more realistic than signing away the future for a top 2-3 QB in the draft or FA.

Unless you are close to competing with your division rival who more times than not is the team to beat, you do not make your moves based on beating them. They are only 2 games of 16, now possibly 17.

The thing is, the moves you make to try and beat the Packers are the same ones you have to make to beat most of the better teams in the league, since they're driven by top tier QB play.

The modern day NFL blueprint remains pretty consistent. Great QB, quality line play and a not god awful defense. The Bears keep trying to build the Trent Dilfer championship team. Not a good idea.

In 2020, the Bears had none of those. With the draft and FA, they could make real improvements in the line play and defense without mortgaging the future. These improvements also happen to directly increase their competitiveness with the Packers, and perhaps their chances of "backing into" the 2021 post-season with a conference championship rather than an unlikely 10-win season.

They had not god awful defense. As much as it fell off, it was still in the upper half of the league.
Improve the line play and defense on this team and what do you have? The 2018 Chicago Bears. You need a QB. Point blank

But your just saying that because you want excuses for why the Packers are a way better organization lol. The Bears hold just as much of not moreso.

And we all saw that week 17 game where the refs were firmly in the Bears corner to no avail.

Example of when the Packers 'gave up' because Rodgers was in a bad mood? Lol?

This is a hilarious description of Rodgers, but completely true.

What’s sad/funny is the only thing the packers notice about the bears, is their dumb decisions to retain a mediocre team president, GM and head coach.
The Bears are Dark Helmet furiously trying to swing their schwartz at Lone Star(Packers), while getting palmed in the head. Its hilarious watching Rodgers pretend to act like this rivalry means anything.

The 49ers games last year come to mind.

My favorite teams
  1. Chicago Bears
Hopefully we can beat Green Bay, Detroit, Minnesota, and Tampa twice to capture the Central.

I agree wholeheartedly, especially since the Bears have some very impressive young cornerbacks already on the roster and really developed a run game in the latter half of the season. Build on those strengths.
