BOURBONNAIS -- The Bears did some very basic preparation for the preseason opener Saturday at San Diego as they worked calling the plays in via the headsets in a hot practice Wednesday afternoon at Olivet Nazarene University.
For the first time this summer, the team didn't wear pads as coach Lovie Smith aims to keep the players fresh and healthy. The team will hold what will basically be a walk-through on Thursday and then travel to California on Friday.
"For the most part our game plan, as far as playing them, has been a quarter the first game, second game until the half and then into the third quarter the third game," Smith said of his preseason schedule. "This year, with a new offense and all, we may play the guys a little bit more (time). Haven't made all those decisions yet."
The bottom line for Smith is he wants to see both units perform well. If the offense goes out and marches 80 yards for a touchdown on its opening possession, that could be it. In the big picture, they want to get to the next stage of evaluation, which is the game.
"We've got to get in and out of the huddle, set a good tempo, we don't want any missed assignments," quarterback Jay Cutler said. "There are probably going to be some things we haven't seen before, it's a 3-4 defense. We're not really preparing for this. This isn't a real game for us. We just want to go out there and take care of ourselves."
Smith indicated that wide receiver Earl Bennett, who is sidelined with a pulled hamstring, is unlikely to play against the Chargers.
MISSING IN ACTION: Bennett was held out as were receiver Greg Mathews (shoulder), cornerback Tim Jennings (knee), running backs Kahlil Bell (hamstring) and Harvey Unga (hamstring), linebackers Pisa Tinoisamoa (unknown) and Brian Iwuh (knee), tight end Kellen Davis (back) and linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer (ankle).
BREAKING ON THE BALL: Safety Chris Harris picked off Cutler on the first play of 11-on-11 work and got near the ball several other times. He's diagnosing his own team's offense pretty well at this point.
