Interesting to see how he has some of these guys stacked against each other. Admittedly, I haven't done much DT research but I didn't know there were this many quality options in this draft. A lot of flavors.

Tier 1
  • Jalen Carter-Says best DT tape he's seen in ten years of doing this.
Tier 2
  • Calijah Kancey-Nothing like his lateral quickness in this draft other than Jalen Carter. Vicious interior pass rusher
  • Keeanu Benton-Says he could go mid-first (17 to Ptt) to mid-second. Good mix of Kancey and Mazi in terms of his ability to both stop the run and rush the passer. Cam Heyward comp.
  • Mazi Smith-Best run defender in the draft besides Carter. DJ Reader comp with less pass rush juice.
Tier 3-should go Day 2, or top end of Day 3
  • Adetomiwa Adeboware/Bryan Bresee-6T/5T on early downs, 3T on passing downs, Morgan Fox/Michael Bennet mixture comp for both, can't play 3T full time as they'll get crushed and washed away
  • Jerrod Clark-Nose/2i, true nose, overwhelming power, Grover Stewart comp
  • Kobie Turner-very versatile, 98th percentile 3-cone, really smart, top 100 "lock"
  • Byron Young-Classic Bama 5T, well-coached, fundamental, good pop in his hands
  • Gervon Dexter-5T/3T, stout run defender and incredible pop in his hands, Arik Armstead comp, slow off the ball (could be coaching or block recognition), raw pass rusher
Tier 4-not much difference between Tiers 3 & 4. Should go late Day 2 to mid Day 3
  • Jaquelin Roy-straight line 3T with little bend/wiggle, rotational 3T, little upside athletically
  • Nesta Jade Silvera-"Bowling ball of destruction", plays with his hair on fire, endless motor, more stout against the run than typical 3Ts, nose versatility
  • Moro Ojomo-Devastatingly powerful run defender, raw as a pass rusher (similiar to Gervon Dexter), a couple years from being a 3T pass rusher on passing downs
  • Siaki Ika/Keondre Coburn-0T nose, stout against the run, tough to uproot, neither are good pass rushers
Tier 5-Could go as high as 4th round through the 6th round
  • Jalen Redmon-Very raw because he came into college at 235 and is now 295. Getting used to new weight as well as playing inside (came into college as an end). Highest pass rush ceiling besides Jalen Carter and Kancey, very low floor
  • Brodric Martin-High highs and low lows, doesn't fully maximize his size (6'5 330)
  • Zacch Pickens-One dimensional, penetrating 3T, cannot anchor against the run to save his life, nice counter moves as a pass rusher
  • Cameron Young-Good run stopping 5T/3T, no juice as a pass rusher

Why does anyone care how Brett Kollmann ranks DTs?
Because once in a while he says nice things about Bears players, and that is a nice change.

This is not a knock on Kollmann, but I would suggest @everyone listen to the 3:00 pm podcast of Parkins and Spiegel, because they had Rod Marinelli on to talk specifically about the 3T. He said that he doesn't care about a lot of the measurables at the combine with the exception of the standing broad jump because it best shows hip explosion. They asked him about the 3-cone and he said he doesn't put much stock into it because you know where you are supposed to be going.

It was an awesome ~15 minutes of a successful defensive coach (kill yourself if you base it only off his HC record) explaining the importance of the position.

I hadn't watched much at all on kobie or ojomo but if they dont get Carter or benton, I'd love to see both those guys added. Kobie appears to have some movement skills similar to kancey but more ability to play the run. Then get an OT in rd 1, a DE and cb rd 2.

Yeah, and by going off of that you can end up with pool jumper as your prize possession of the draft. Not saying hip explosion isn't important, but give the guy that produces every time over a player that needs to be molded. Taking a flyer on someone like Henry Milton later in the draft is a different story.

You're misunderstanding what I quoted from @RiDLer80's OP, and why I brought up what Rod Marinelli (again, a guy with a proven track record) said in the interview.

Brett spent time with guys at the Shrine Bowl. There’s a lot of great interviews this year. He’s generally solid in his evals and offers detailed perspective on later round prospects.

He worked at NFL network cutting up tape before going to YouTube, so he has pro connections. The Chargers recently hired him to produce content.

Lets draft the Samford OL who blocked Carter all game and didn't give up but 1 tackle to this Hall of Famer...
OR
Maybe Kent St OL 0 tackles, 0 sacks ??
Oh wait, we can look at 6 other teams OL's that gave up 0 sacks.....these are some awful stats. 2021 just as bad!

There's deep OL content on the Athletic Football Show this weekend.

Part 1: Dane Brugler and Brandon Thorn
Part 2: Mitchell Schwartz and Marshall Newhouse

Both pods are hosted by Robert Mays, so you get some team specific context for the Bears at a few points. You can get the show on whatever podcast platform you use if you don't have an Athletic sub.

Dexter is not a true 3-tech. Way too slow off the snap. Same with Bresee. Don't get me wrong, they're fine DTs but not that quick penetrator that this staff likely prefers. I pretty much see Carter and Kancey as Bear tragets along with maybe converting DEs like Adeboware, Keion White and Van Ness. Nice thing about the last 3, they'd still be VG DEs if the move didn't look viable. Guys seems a bit long for it but are strong and get good jumps on the snap. Can they get low enough?

Stats don't tell you very much about an interior lineman who is constantly absorbing double teams all game. Carter looks like a beast on tape.

That said, I wouldn't take Carter at #9 because at least one of Skoronski/Johnson/Witherspoon/Gonzales is going to be available at #9, and I like those guys better than Carter.
