Can we stop acting like Pagano is the major issue on defense?

When you have the top paid defense in the NFL and they perform at a fringe top 10 level, then yes, Pagano gets the blame. That is underperformed and a failure to get the best out of your players.

The talent was there, even if we lacked the depth. That is what happens when you have top paid players at the starting positions.

The issue is that not one player, outside of Roquan, had their best year under Pagano. Every one regressed. We pay our defense to carry the load. Our offense ranked about where they are paid in the mid 20.

Pagano copied the popular move nowadays of playing a super conservative defense and keeping scoring down by making teams methodically drive up the field. Offenses are so effecient because of the rule changes so defenses have transitioned into smoke and mirrors bs. They’re trying to keep scores low by making teams drive and eliminating quick scoring. So when you look at a stat sheet and have no context you go “well the defense only gave up 20 points“ while it’s being ignored that Pagano basically let them hold the ball 70% of the game. They also can’t stop a nose bleed on 3rd down because they’re always in some sort of conservative defense and almost just handing teams the 1st. The offense at points last year for long periods of time couldn’t get on the field. The amount of 10+ play drives on the Bears last year had to be absurd.

Then people can come on here and be like “the defense is fine. Look at the numbers. The offense sucks.blah blah blah.” But in reality the high paid defense is really just doing some smoke and mirrors stuff. I’ve literally never seen a half decent Bears team like last year, where they couldn’t get the defense off the field. It was a freaking joke. There was no innovation. It was just Pagano doing the most generic trend of the day thing in its most conservative form.
