Nice rebound to the Giants series. Davies was playing at his home park and smoked them. We saw what a not sick Jake can do for 5. SD just beat a blister finger and two rookies in the pen.

I feel pretty good if the Cubs match up against SD in a series. If things play out.

SD & LAD 1 game.

WC vs SFG
Cubs vs NYM

Mets have a solid 3 man rotation. Cubs most likely get to Marcus and Taijuan. deGromm it would be better to match Davies against him and hope for a A game. Play for the loss and set up Hendricks and Alozay vs Stroman and Walker. 4th starter Cubs have the advantage.

So it is doable.

Then you hope SDP beats both LAD and SFG. Cubs match them up

So, if the Cubs decide to make a run at it, who are they going after before the deadline? They need to add a starter to the rotation and a bat.

Look at the best starters on the worst teams.

I believe Boyd might be the easiest to attain. He is ranked #28 in fWAR for qualified pitchers. Detroit is going nowhere. Boyd fits into the plans going forward so Jed could make a legit offer to get him. He comes with control for 2022 which is a plus. Add to it Jed could extend him having him and Kyle to provide stabity to a young rotation.

Now who to trade? 1 year plus is worth a bit more than a rental. But as we saw with the Darvish deal Boyd is not going to get a top 100. At best we are talking Franklin with 2 x45 tier players. The market most likely will be saturated with pitchers for sale and Scherzer and a few from Denver should be the main targets for the contenders. Boyd comes with a year and most teams looking for pitching don't want the attachment into next year's budget. The Cubs on the other hand are dropping Davies and the vacancy naturally is opened up.
