Cunningham is in a great position. 2nd in command and highly sought after. Poles knew when hired he was going to get looks based on his experience in Philly and Cunningham knows his name is in demand. Not many GM's get second chances so makes sense he is going to wait for the right opportunity.

Do you really want to deal with Murray and his contract?

He may also have promised Poles 2 years but is taking on the process/staying in the loop. I would try to get that verbal commit when hiring some positions like OC and asst GM.

He feels like he owes Poles and wants to stay a 2nd year so we get 2 compensatory picks in the 3rd round.

If he's got options, then waiting is the smart thing to do. He could conceivably get a GM job next offseason and who knows, perhaps that team has the #1 pick? Having Caleb Williams as your first pick would be pretty dope.

Because Cunningham, unlike 90 percent of the casual fans here, realizes the potential with this organization based on the resources that he has to work with. It will make his resume that much more impressive when he gets the gig that he wants.

Why did he interview if he didn't want the job?
Doing interviews builds your interviewing skills and having been interviewed by multiple teams builds interest for GM candidates. Honestly turning down a position will probably make other teams more interested in him, as he has the ability to discern a bad situation that isn't worth taking over. Doing the interview does nothing but help him

Why did he interview if he didn't want the job?
Because ownership might have lowballed him and/or might have said there are some things he couldn’t do. When Pace was hired, he was basically the 2nd choice. Ballard walked away from the gig because ownership wanted to keep Cutler. He allegedly made it clear he wanted Cutler gone ASAP

There's no way Cunningham turned down the Cards job purely out of loyalty to Poles. That's not how it works.

I agree with those saying there must have been some sticking point or a way Cards higher-ups were that made Cunningham uncomfortable or realize it might be better to wait for the next opportunity. Remember that in a job interview, you're also interviewing your prospective employer.

Why did he interview if he didn't want the job?
To see if he wanted the jobs and able to get them on his required terms. Titans are run by their HC who got the last GM fired so he may have not liked a potential power struggle once he verified the pecking order and the Cards may have laid down some personnel rules he didn't care for. He'll get other offers and is likely waiting for the right one where the buck effectively starts and stops with him. That's not to say you need full autonomy from an owners opinion but you need to find a situation where you're on the same page of job description, control and boundaries.

It means he's not desperate for the title, true to himself and likes it here. :)

I'd be weary of that situation in Arizona as well. GM's, unlike Head coaches, typically only get 1 shot to get it right.

You're handcuffed to Murray because of his contract, their Cap situation isn't anything to write home about, and they only have 5 selections in the draft.

I can really see a path way to Will Anderson for us. It makes sense for some team to trade up to #3 for Levis or Stroud. And for Arizona, they need as many shots as they can to get it right through the draft since other avenues are gonna be limited.
