US planning for 2010, some ’08 stars could return

By BRIAN MAHONEY, AP Basketball Writer 36 minutes ago

LeBron James(notes), Kobe Bryant(notes) and the core of the Olympic basketball champions could be back in USA uniforms next summer for the world championships.

USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo says he met with half the team during the NBA All-Star break and it’s a “distinct possibility” that some of the gold medalists will play in Turkey in 2010.

USA Basketball plans to hold a mini-camp this summer for 24 young players who could be candidates for the team. Kevin Durant(notes) and Derrick Rose(notes), the last two rookies of the year, along with likely No. 1 draft pick Blake Griffin from Oklahoma have accepted invitations to participate.

Colangelo added he is giving coach Mike Krzyzewski time to decide if he wants to return and expects to have a coach in place in the fall.

USA better send their A-team, otherwise they risk being embarassed. Spain and Argentina will be good as usual. Greece is always pesky.

Great Britain will be the team to watch. They have a lot of good pieces going forward with Gordon, Deng, Pops-Mensah Bonsu, Betts, Freeland. It seems pretty likely that Azuibuke will be playing too, so they just have a lot of fire power.
