Are the Bears in a better position than fans think to get Deshaun Watson?
I was a little surprised listening to the latest Hoge and Jahns to hear them say so matter-of-factly that the Bears are a much better destination than New York.
The thinking went that the Bears are an 8-8 playoff team with a good defense and a great receiver even while going through the Foles/Trubisky QB carousel, while the Jets are likely to be bad no matter who’s at QB over at least the next few years, because they simply don’t have anyone good.
Adam Schefter said something similar yesterday, saying that Jets fans shouldn’t get their hopes up, but that the Bears would be among the teams Watson probably wouldn’t veto because he’s so desperate to get out ANYWHERE and that Chicago actually offers some things.
Schefter went on:
“Why would he come to Chicago? Let’s get past little slights or overlooks. Tradition-laden franchise, great city, great fans, strong defense, people who are committed to him.....I think there are very few places that should be and would be and could be ruled out. I think the first thing is, is your franchise the Houston Texans? No? O.K., let’s go from there....I don’t have any reason to believe the Bears would be one of those franchises (that Watson would veto).”
