Jenkins,WH, Davis- an above average nasty group
I get the positivity, and I'm trying to buy in, but exactly how is this 'above average nasty' when its only one replacement from last year's IOL when Jenkins struggled to stay on the field, Whitehair got beat a lot for a guy making $14 mil, and the new addition, Nate Davis--was allowed to walk even though the Titans cut a bunch of names to get comfortably in the black to have a decent FA and draft cap wise--and a 26-year-old starter wasn't worth their cap space, but a bench player from Philly was worth more than what the bears paid Jones?
I don't like that. Tennessee runs teams over with King Henry, and this dude wasn't a priority even after they cut Ben Jones from their interior just before FA window started. Andre Dillard was their priority before drafting Skoronski to replace Lewan.
Hope I'm wrong, but I'm not sure this is above average nasty. Whitehair has been moved away from C way too many times over the years, because he knuckleballs shotgun snaps to his QB and can be really slow off the snap, especially with a penetrating/non-NT DT. Jenkins had to do the job of two men, because he helped Mustiphuck out way too often. I think they got slightly better at C, even though they're paying 14 mil instead of 1 and change.
IDL: Justin Jones and Armon Watts as your go to guys, ok--------------------------------------Jones,Billings, Dexter, Pickens -more beef, more potential
Justin Jones, Dexter, and Pickens all can't be on the Field as a DT unless you're in a goalline/stack the line because its 4th and short situation. I'm curious though, because U of Florida played Dexter at DT/edge on a 4 man front. Are the bears going to do the same? Because Demarcus Walker is one starter at edge, and they haven't bought someone to start opposite him (though I submit they can still add to the position and buy Floyd, Ngokue, Carlos Dunlap, or Frank Clark in coming weeks/months on a short term deal).
I already know what Trevis Gipson cant do, and am shocked he wasn't immediately cut, because he was always immediately blocked and doesn't fit a 4 man defensive front. Dude's always been a stand up edge in a 3-4/3-3-5 since college until last year, and I guess the benefit of being cheap on a rookie deal is the most likeable thing about him. And Dominique Robinson? After Quinn got traded, he couldn't get into the backfield if you gave him all day, have nobody to block him, and gave him a map to get there.
I don't buy potential here for the time being unless Ngokue or Clark get added. I can give Poles the benefit of the doubt that the OL, LB, and WR were big priorities and he addressed them (I don't like his backwards approach to building the defense secondary 1st, then LBs, then DL, but he's the GM), but the list of needs is still so long he can't do it all in an offseason.
Might finally build a normal offensive line in 2024
Key word 'normal.'
Buffalo fixed their line for Josh Allen, Philly for Hurts. KC for Mahomes for those buying the 'year 3 jump.' I don't think Poles has done enough.
Imo this is a huge year for Braxton.
I'm annoyed that for the time being, it appears he has zero competition for LT, unless he and Wright are going to duke it out in camp for each spot...
He was a run mauler who could pancake Lbs and Dbs with the best of them. He couldn't handle 3 step or 5 step drops, and he was too inconsistent pass blocking, where it looked like the only way to get anything out of him was treat him like Charles Leno--AKA roll away from him in order to get the QB 3 seconds to throw the ball, because there was no way JF was getting 3 seconds with him and Mustiphuck.
He plays an immaculate game the 2nd game against GB which makes me think I was wrong that he isn't another Jordan Mills type guy--where he's a late round pick who can stay healthy and be 'meh' because its the bears and the OL isn't what you think of when you think bears. But then--he follows up his best game of the year getting his ass handed to him by the undrafted rookie from Detroit.
I hope all the social media vignettes of him working out/training pay off. I do. It'd be nice to say we have a competent LT. Haven't been able to say that since John Tait.
