PLAYER COMPARISON

Warren Sapp

SCOUTING REPORT: SUMMARY

Jalen Carter is an elite prospect, he's simply always been great - from dominating in high school to being a five-star prospect to becoming the best player on the best defense in the nation. He's an elite athlete and his technique is almost as equally impressive. Carter will start as a rookie and could easily become a perennial pro bowler.

He's the top defensive lineman in the draft and worthy of the top overall pick, although it's unlikely he's going number one.

1 [20] RB Bijan Robinson [Texas] 6'0 220lbs

  • Robinson brings a nice blend of size, speed and power. His best attribute is his relentlessness; He consistently thrashes through tacklers to turn minimal gains into long ones.
  • He’s aggressive and willing, with more than enough size when asked to chip block or pick up blitzers. He has the potential to be one of the league’s best in that area.
  • He has very good vision and a knack for picking out cut-back lanes and then breaking off chunks of yardage.
  • Does a nice job of detecting holes in the line and when he sees one he has an impressive burst
  • Possesses quick feet and straight-line speed although doesn't have the elite burst to be a constant big-play threat. Is patient as a runner, following pulling guards and makes good decisions on his cut.
  • Fights for extra yardage and is reliable in short-yardage situations.
  • Very well-balanced runner who is able to run with ease through all but the heaviest tackles without going to the ground
  • Well-developed moves make excellent use of the stiff arm, has an elite-level spin move and a beautiful stutter step
  • Despite being a big back is still able to cut on a dime - and is a natural quick twitch player
  • Good receiver with decent hands who can explode for big gains if given the space
  • Consistent pass blocker - with an instinct to pick up pass rushers
  • He keeps his pads low and consistently falls forward. Unlike most backs his size, he has the lateral movement and stop-start ability to make defenders whiff. Robinson has breakaway speed in the open field.

2 [33] WR Rashee Rice [SMU] 6'2 203lbs

  • He’s a fluid athlete with excellent short-area quickness; Rice should be able to create separation, and he has the straight-line speed to threaten down the seam.
  • Rice is a natural playmaker, at his best with the ball in his hands.
  • A fluid mover capable of creating some separation over the middle of the field, he has the long arms and soft hands to provide a sizable catch radius.
  • Shows good sense as a route runner and provides an enormous catch radius over the middle of the field. He has soft hands and uses his frame effectively to shield defenders, making him a major threat in the red zone.
  • Has a tall frame and long arms, plus strong hands, giving him a huge catch radius.
  • Although he is more of a possession target than a field stretcher, he fiercely competitive demeanor and run-after-catch ability make him a major threat in the middle of the field.
  • Rice plays with a smoothness and balance, and he shows a knack for setting up defensive backs.

2 [52] OL Cody Mauch [North Dakota] 6'6 303lbs

  • A smooth athlete with terrific mobility and footwork, staying light on his feet. Has the lateral range, natural shuffle movements, and lower body quickness to mirror speed rushers.
  • He’s especially light on his feet considering his size, a fluid mover who has natural balance as Mauch kick-slides and sets. Mauch has the long arms to ward off pass rushers and send them flying past the pocket.
  • Carries his weight naturally, wide-framed with low body fat, along with long arms and large, powerful hands. Mauch moves naturally, with agile feet and the natural balance to mirror in pass protection.
  • Adequate foot quickness to remain outside. Can get to the second level with surprising agility when adjusting to moving defenders. Underrated athleticism, agility, balance, and even straight-line speed to contribute.
  • Effective in space and usually drops his hips to get leverage and sustain against shorter defenders.

2 [56] C Ricky Stromberg [Arkansas] 6'4 315lbs

  • His high football IQ and the ability to set protections at the line of scrimmage will make him popular with position coaches. He’s instinctive after the snap, reading and reacting quickly to stunts and twists and showing an understanding of angles in the run game.
  • He’ll consistently finish blocks, dropping on defenders when Stromberg has them on the ground. Stromberg shows good awareness reacting to twists and stunts as a pass protector, and he has the strength to anchor against bigger defensive linemen.
  • Stromberg thrives on physicality, often out-grappling bigger defensive linemen and winning in the phone booth with tenacity and upper-body strength.
  • Mauler in the run game, playing with a nasty disposition and showing excellent snap and punch quickness.
  • Awareness is above-average for his limited experience. Sells trap block and can turn to seal. Fluid getting to and adjust at the second level.

3 [65] * Bears trade pick to Arizona Cardinals for WR De Andre Hopkins

4 [103] LB Mike Jones Jr [LSU] 6'1 230lbs

  • Has recovery speed to get back into plays. Reliable open-field tackler. Adds himself to piles and churns his legs to push back ballcarriers.
  • In coverage, Jones shows excellent awareness and anticipation when dropping back into zone, and he has the fluidity and speed to run with most tight ends over the middle.
  • Can attack the edge with speed and has the flexibility to dip low and under the tackle's reach.
  • He’s an instinctive and active chase-and-tackle 4-3 Will, with the speed to go sideline to sideline. Jones takes excellent angles. He also has an innate sense for shooting gaps as a run defender.
  • The talent is there as a sideline-to-sideline playmaker.
  • Jones shows good speed and closing burst when blitzing.

4 [134] TE Cameron Latu [Alabama] 6'5 244lbs

  • Latu has strong hands and is extremely competitive, and Latu has an innate sense of timing when it comes to elevating and high-pointing balls.
  • Good burst off the snap, quick hands and good balance to gain a clean release.
  • Good strength and effort to run through arm tackles.
  • Latu has a tapered build and strong hands, ripping the ball back with ease when defensive backs manage to get a hold of it.
  • A lean athlete with obvious upside. Soft hands. Flashes the ability to make the outstanding catch.

er-offseason-additions-Miles-Kitselman-Danny-Lewis.jpg

5 [136] CB DJ Turner [Michigan] 6'0 180lbs

  • Can get up on the line of scrimmage and deliver a solid punch early in routes, then use that quickness to shadow, or back off and close quickly when the ball comes out
  • Turner can flip his hips and run, with good top-end speed and the length to make plays on the ball.
  • Made Bruce Feldman's Freak's List - ranked #31. He wrote, "He is the fastest guy on the Wolverines, having hit 23.07 mph on the GPS and run a 4.28 40 — out of a two-point stance, no less. His 3-cone time is even more stunning. He clocked a 6.29 this offseason, and strength coaches think he has a good shot at besting the combine record of 6.28, set in 2018 by Oklahoma’s Jordan Thomas. "
  • Has the fluidity, speed and quick feet to come down and defend slot receivers in man coverage. Turner also does a nice job breaking down in space as a tackler after the catch.
  • Has the change-of-direction ability to mirror underneath but did solid work out of press and off coverage.
  • Does a good job getting his head around in time when playing with his back to the line of scrimmage. Has the ability to cover quickness underneath.

5 [148] WR AT Perry [Wake Forrest] 6'5 200lbs

  • He’s very good in contested-catch situations, using his frame effectively to make plays facing the quarterback. Perry also shows a knack for high-pointing the ball, consistently outmuscling defensive backs.
  • Has the strong hands any NFL wide receiver coach and quarterback would covet. Tracks the deep ball over either shoulder and brings in passes fluidly without breaking stride downfield.
  • He is a natural playmaker, at his best with the ball in his hands.
  • He accelerates quickly and possesses good straight-line speed. He shows solid ball-tracking skills and body control downfield, able to adjust to the off-target throw.
  • Tracks the ball well downfield and shows good ball skills, including the ability to go up and high-point it in contested-catch situations.
  • Thriving on physicality, he’s a contested-catch specialist with a knack for warding off defenders while the ball is in the air. Perry has strong hands and the ability to wrestle the ball away from defenders.

.T.-Perry-WR-Wake-Forest-NFL-Draft-Scouting-Report.jpg

5 [159] S Ronnie Hickman [Ohio State] 6'1 207lbs

  • Has the fluid athleticism and speed to cover tight ends and maybe even some big slot receivers. Hickman has the ball skills to create turnovers. He also has value as a blitzer.
  • In the run game, he’s aggressive coming downhill and a hits hard
  • Has ideal size, as well as the straight-line speed and fluidity to turn his hips and run. He can cover a ton of ground as a run defender.
  • Reads receivers' routes and anticipates throws at the first down marker. Covers a lot of ground in a hurry when in space. Reads the quarterback's eyes and sees the routes very quickly, then has straight-line speed to arrive with or just after the ball.
  • Has good body control and balance to redirect and break down in the open field.
  • Has explosive movement skills and the fluid athleticism and change-of-direction ability to come down and cover slot receivers.
  • Has a nice, low backpedal and shows the click-and-close ability to play off his man. Hickman also has the good long speed to turn and run as a press coverage guy and the powerful hands to disrupt receivers early in the route

135144_h.jpg

7 [220] QB Jaren Hall [BYU] 6'1 205lbs

  • A former baseball player - and it shows in his fastball delivery
  • Seems to have a natural affinity for the position - so even as a first-year quarterback he looked composed
  • Physically, Hall is a natural athlete who plays with the balance and light feet to float in the pocket.
  • Hall is enough of a threat as a runner to earn respect from back-side defenders at the next level, opening opportunities for running backs.
  • Good accuracy overall, including excellent accuracy on short timing routes to backs and receivers, placing the ball slightly in front to lead receivers to potential yardage after the catch.
  • Possesses a strong right arm and is capable of making every NFL throw easily. Can drive the deep out to the sideline from the opposite hash and has no problem threading the needle between closing defenders. Easily zips to all areas of the field, demonstrating very good touch on underneath routes to running backs and receivers, as well as down the sideline on deep passes.
  • Dual-threat quarterback with athletic footwork and mobility. An instinctive runner with very good toughness - uses stiff arms and runs with good body strength.
  • Is a composed player with the ability to quickly read the defense and works through his reads quickly
  • Accurate and has the touch to deliver the ball where only his receivers can catch it
  • Patient in the pocket - does not take off too early and bail out too early on plays

Free Agency

* Bears trade 2023 third round pick to the Arizona Cardinals for WR DeAndre Hopkins

Bears trade for WR DeAndre Hopkins

Bears trade their 2023 third round pick for WR DeAndre Hopkins they need to give Justin Fields a legit number one WR option as it's crucial for his development as a QB. They will have to overpay a little bit but it'll be worth it in the end when Bears have a top five QB in Fields.

Bears sign DT Poona Ford to 3 years 33 million

Poona Ford is hitting free agency after a down year. He didn’t appear to fit in Pete Carroll’s new 3-4 scheme, but he’s shown a high level previously as a penetrator.

180446.jpg

Bears sign RT Mike McGlinchey to 4 years 61 million

Jack Conklin set the market for right tackles this off season and McGlinchey should get a similar contract as him and hopefully that puts him out the market for 49ers where he's had an up and down career as a right tackle.

usatsi_13826389.jpg

Bears sign DE Yannick Ngakoue to 4 years 55 million

Yannick is a big liability against the run that's why he's been on five different NFL teams but one thing he can do really well is get to the QB for the sack. He did well with the Colts but with a new regime change I'd reckon he's out again.

AP22303780629523.jpg

Bears sign ROLB Bobby Okereke to 2 years 10 million

He has a connection with Matt Eberflus and the Colts and has an understanding of his system he's a solid player that won't cost much and will upgrade the LB core.

Would really prefer the Bears find a way to snag a Daron Payne or Javon Hargrave at DT vs Poona Ford but other than that I would love all this.

I think if Commanders were going to get rid of Payne it would of been before the trade deadline but Poona is a decent DT that won't break the bank like Dre'Mont Jones will if Broncos don't tag him.

After this free agency Bears still have plenty of cap space just don't want to waste it on guys like Chark.

With the Bears draft position and cap space, this is actually possible. Looking at the depth chart, the team would be considerably better in ‘23 with plenty of ammo going into 2024 too.

If McGlinchey isn't available I like Kaleb McGary a lot as well.

Bears have to spend bank. NFL only allows a percentage to carry forward. No where near the 90 million they have to spend. Capt. Obvious out...

Hopkins has a no trade clause and would want a contract extension. It’s a good mock but I rather get a WR with the #20 in Zay flowers or JSN.

I would like this. Carter and Bijan in the first would upset some people, but oh well.
