Good New Chalk-Talk- M. Wilson IR, Conte Surgery, T. Scott making 53...

From what I’ve seen, Trevor Scott has had some quality reps in the preseason. How does he fit in the defensive end mix?

I agree with you about defensive end Trevor Scott performing well in preseason games. He also impressed me throughout training camp. It seemed like I was writing his number down in my notepad after a good pass rush in team drills on a daily basis. In terms of Scott’s role, it looks like he will be rotated into the lineup as the fourth defensive end behind Jared Allen, Lamarr Houston and Willie Young, though Scott is being pushed by fellow veteran Austen Lane. Scott is a seven-year veteran who has appeared in 76 career games with 18 starts for the Raiders (2008-11), Patriots (2012) and Buccaneers (2013).

Why do so many injured players wait so long after the season to have corrective surgery? For instance, Chris Conte waited until March to have his shoulder surgery which caused him to miss the entire offseason and most of training camp.

I don’t know about Chris Conte’s specific situation, but I was talking to a Bears veteran (not Conte) about why players sometimes wait to have surgery and he told me something I hadn’t considered. He explained that players typically have issues with their knees, legs, shoulders, elbows, etc. every year after battling through a rigorous NFL season and sometimes assume what they’re feeling is just normal soreness rather than an injury that could require surgery. It’s not until they start working out again in February or March and are still hurting that they realize that they're experiencing more than just soreness. Again, I don’t know if that’s what transpired with Conte, but it’s interesting to consider.

Has there been any talk about whether the Bears will carry receiver Marquess Wilson on their 53-man roster, place him on injured reserve or put him on IR/designated to return while he recovers from his broken collarbone?

I believe that the Bears intend to keep Marquess Wilson on their 53-man roster while he recovers from the broken collarbone he sustained in training camp. Putting him on injured reserve with the designation to return sometime this season remains an option, but teams can only use that with one player a season and I don’t see them doing that unless they have a rash of injuries and really need Wilson’s roster spot.

Would be nice to put Wilson on IR/designated to return, but he's hardly a required player. We'd probably reserve that for a Cutler, Bennett, Forte injury.

That would also make Wilson ineligible to play until after week 8 and unable to practice until week 6. He will be 5 weeks removed from the injury at week 1, so depending on healing, he may be ready before then.

I really doubt that...

Two internet sites say 12 weeks minimum before beginning aggressive strengthening. And were talking about NFL football for a smaller WR. That would put him into (very risky) Week 7 or 8 at earliest.

Larry says they plan to keep him on 53, but I really doubt it. Would they cut Williams, Holmes, Morgan or Spurlock to keep Wilson on the bench for at least 8 weeks? Wilson, who has 2 career receptions? I don't so. I think he's IR all year.

I doubt Spurlock makes the 53. He has already fumbled twice and Morgan is going to have to contribute on special teams to make the team.

If that's really why so many guys have surgeries so late in the offseason teams should really institute some policy to protect players from their own stupidity. If my job involved being in top physical shape and often needing surgery to repair various injuries -- or simple wear and tear -- my first stop after the end of the season would be to a bunch of doctors to have every little ache or pain checked out. Shoulder or knee hurts? Joint specialist here I come! Random thigh pain? Orthopedic surgeon, check this shit out for me man!

I just don't understand the "wait a few months and see" mentality when your career is potentially on the line (due to either severity, or simply missing camp and getting cut if you weren't that good to begin with).

Considering how many different things can be sore, that sounds like an awful lot of money being thrown around.

I'd imagine that every person on the team is sore in at least three places after any given season.

Yeah, it blows when they wait to have surgery, since it pushes back their return date. The only other explanation that makes any sense is that they're given the choice between rehab and surgery. So maybe they give rehab a try for a few months, then realize rehab alone isn't going to cut it(?)

I thought it was already reported a while back the Bears had and COnte had the choice of surgery or rehab and they opted with rehab. Once they found out the rehab was not working, then they went with surgery.

Sure, but it's not their money. League provided insurance baby! Milk those greedy fuckers for all you can while in their employ!

I dunno, an extended injury keeps one from potential future injury.

We know what happened to Conte. From the Sun-Times three months ago:

Right now, that means rehabbing his right shoulder. Conte remains on track to return during training camp after surgery for what he said was an “ongoing injury” that he carried all of last season.

“It’s a thing I tried to rehab, and it’s something I had an issue with,” Conte said. “For me to play at 100 percent, I had to get it done.”

I guess there are a few ways to take that, but when I first read it, I figured they meant he literally tried to rehab it first, then went to surgery after rehab didn't work out.
