This is a good point. I'd like to see rookie numbers for QBs from the last 5 years. Still, I'm of the opinion you can't give up on any rookie after just one season.
I think 3-4 years is the appropriate range, unless it’s very clear they’re terrible and have no upside.

Fields clearly has a bunch of upside. He also clearly has a lot of room to improve, some of which is indeed related to the team and coaching around him.

Failing as a rookie QB is ok, as long as there is growth and potential. Years 2 and 3 is when expectations are going to rise and deservedly so.

I still don’t get how anyone could just “give up” on the type of talent he has.

He may very well fail, we’re used it as bears fans, but based on the fact he’s a rookie, has big potential, is a gamer, smart, etc. deserves some patience.

Good thing Stafford elevated Detroit

Brees did the same for the Chargers lol (Brees also wasn't selected top 5, but here comes the technicality)

I just don’t get why you want to spend your time dissing a rookie. He has made his fair share of mistakes, but to pound his abilities and disregard his flashes is just plain stupid. I mean, you do you, but there is a shit ton of talent there.

Even if you and others who want to be first to the bust train are correct, I will give you credit for all the BS trolling, but what a shitty life to start there vs ride the ups and downs and hope the potential is met for this young man.

Calling a rookie inconsistent is just laughable. Lose me with that “objectivity”.

interesting list but how many of them are from Ohio State?

A guy who’s screen name is literally bust, and the resident board negative Nancies that are against everything,

There are several, like myself, that thinks he has a lot more to prove though…
there are a few on this board that will view that statement as negative

So in basically 40 years, Ohio State had two QBs drafted in the first round to have any sort of expectation to be good, solid NFL starters. And one them, Haskins, was told by Ohio State coaches he wasn't ready for the NFL and should stay in school. That's the list you want to keep pounding like it will have any bearing whatsoever on Fields? Ok.

That's as relevant as pointing out that Aaron Rodgers was a Jeff Tedford coached QB. And he had a hell of lot more guys he coached drafted in the 1st round that failed before Rodgers.

Fields at times has looked like the best player and athlete on the field. He has flashed. Let’s see what happens when the offensive side is invested in and he gets a better system (hopefully). I feel like sky is that limit here, there are so many tools to dork with.
I disagree with that. He’s a pretty good runner but honestly it’s kind of awkward when runs and gets tackled.

There a handful of other QBs who are just as good and some better than him at running imo.

Fair, he has had some awkward slides and the injuries have been cause for concern but at times he has looked fast as shit. Long term, you don’t want him to continue running like he has been, but there a ton of tools to like

Josh Allen is probably the only relevant one. It was a LONG time ago when most of those players were rookies. The game changes over time, and so do the standards.
I'd add the one thing that doesn't change with time is confidence. He has shown the ability to move on and still be sure of himself, whether it is well placed is yet to be seen. I like his confidence, toughness, and desire. He wants to be great.

The only thing I'm not sure of... does he truly want to be a Chicago Bear. Maybe it's the meatball in me that wants that, but who can blame him if that's the case. Nothing in our history shows a dedication to the position except the current front office's idea that the only problem we have is a franchise QB.

yeah, that lazy baseball, pop up slide is gonna blow out a knee on turf... especially when some juiced up defender adds his fatz on top

People calling Fields a bust at this point is a joke. Besides the fact that he didn't get any 1st team reps in the off season, has a bad oline, no number 1 receiver and had the dreaded Nagy playbook, here is his rating compared to other QB's in their rookie years

76.9 - Drew Brees
73.2 - Justin Fields
71.2 - Peyton Manning
67.9 - Josh Allen
61 - Matthew Stafford
55.4 - Eli Manning
39.8 - Aaron Rodgers - Okay he only threw 16 passes but still had a pick

its not real ccs if you dont compare him to just black rookie qbs.

Exactly. And he always fails to give any sort of situational breakdown as to what happen with each of the said OSU Qb's. There's a fallacy in there somewhere.t I believe what he's doing is called a hasty generalization ? ?

Off top of my head I know Art Schlichter had a serious gambling problem. Haskins wasn't wanted in Washington by all parties. But @Bust should be giving us a truthful break down vs a hasty generalization

OSU Qb's have a NFL winning record.....83-69

That's it move the goalposts, what's next, is it the Ohio State QB curse, or a black qb is just not smart enough???
