Watch "Hardwood Classics" on NBA TV. They had Game 5 of Celtics vs 76ers in 1981. Celtics were down by 6 with about 5 minutes ago and Larry just took over. I mean took over on the defensive end. His hands were all in the passing lanes and his ability to read them was great to watch. It seems, as times wears on, he is being underrated now. The guy was one of the greatest shooters ever and probably would rival Steph Curry if he focused on the long range. This in a what? 6'9 frame and was an absolute complete player and hear top notch trash talker.

What yall say?

I don't recall ever hearing a word about his defense before.

Bird was a smart defender. He didn't start giving up on plays until his back issues started to linger.

Len Bias dying was probably the slightly premature death of that team.

Bias not dying, and Bird and McHale are able to get more rest, maybe Bird doesn't blow out his back, Celtics are probably more viable down the stretch and maybe the Lakers don't win in 87, the Pistons never get out of the East and the Celtics are more a foe for the Bulls in the early 90s. Even in our timeline, the Celtics still won 56 games and a 2nd seed in 1992. They lost to Cleveland in 7 games in the second round.

Larry was fine as long as DJ or Danny Ainge got him the ball. That is the main difference, Magic, MJ, nobody had to touch the ball but them.

Even thought Dj and Ainge are over looked because of how epic the front court was on that team. In no way, did Bird need to be facilitated the ball. Bird could have played point forward easily.

Bird was not only a great shooter but he had an incredible basketball IQ. Some guys just see everything and know how to anticipate what’s going to happen. Bird was one of those guys.

He played the game the right way too. He had no issue making the right pass as opposed to taking the shot if the situation dictated it.
