I saw him play many times at Sox Park.
He not only was a great ballplayer, he was a great guy.
I was fortunate enough to have spoken with him a couple of times and he was really funny & interesting.
And he was a hell of a ballplayer:

Last I had heard, his lifetime average was .298. Today, Baseball Reference has him at .299. He must have eked out one last hit from the afterlife since his election. Impressive (but not surprising).
