Cubs reliever Brandon Morrow has suffered a setback in his recovery from elbow surgery, President Theo Epstein told reporters including Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. He’ll miss the remainder of the season.

More to come.

Brandon Morrow is going to end up being paid $21 million dollars for 30 innings of work.

In the previous 11 years, he made $27 million.

Eh he had a sub 2 ERA in 1/2 a season.

You blame Theo on his decisions. Morrow is fricking a beast when out there. But offering a 2+ to a known injury case was stupid. And he paid in spades for it.

Don't be mad at the player. Be mad at the evaluation.

Theo should have resigned Davis and not signed Chatwood. Not signed Morrow.

It was a safe investment. But he learned and paid for Kimbrel. At least he is not a fool.

This signing was a stretch. IIRC Morrow had injury issues before the signing.

Exactly.

I see that off-season as they got wrapped up in the sweepstakes for Otani. Morrow and Chatwood were after they fell out. Going in Theo decided that Davis was out. Their belief was closers were not worth 18 Mil per. Well they were wrong. But in the aftermath they did sign Kimbrel for market value for closers vs trying to frugal an answer.

So he did learn that trying to short change a contender never works. I see the investment into a closer as vital to any contender. It is not about pitching 1 inning. It is about being the anchor that keeps the pen stable.

Savings should come in lesser leverage situations. Like Wick and Underwood. Those two have shown the ability to perform on the big stage and having the raw stuff that plays up. All it takes is exposure and experience. Most of all an opertunity to polish.

Let's face it just dropping Cishek and Strop is a 12.75 mil payroll drop. Wick and Underwood backfill at 1.2 mil of it. Take out the 3 mil hit from Morrow you are still 8.5 mil ahead.

So much of the issues are taken care of internal anyways.

Getting deeper into the pen:

Chatwood=> 5th starter.

Mills => long relief (2 inning guy)
Underwood => long relief (2 inning guy)
Phelps=> 1 inning arm (1 mil opt)

Ryan=> 7th inning
Wick=> 8th inning
Kimbrel=> 9th inning

So they need 2 lefties. Wieck and Roserio would be internal options but they really should think on a real investment here.

Smith is the extreme move. The gamble move is Cingrani off shoulder injury. Rest are dependant on options falling off.

They could also look at older ex-starter lefties looking to finish up their careers.

They could also offer Kintzler a 1 year and it is fine for the 2nd arm.
