He was so athletic he spent his first couple years returning KO’s, and crushing it, too, just so he could get on the field.
Evans had an amazing arm, was tall, fluid and athletic, but spent his Bear career playing for inept HC’s Jack Pardee and then Neil Armstrong.
Fun fact, I was at the game in NO in ‘83 when he and rookie McMahon QB’d the Bears in an amazing overtime contest vs a rickety old Kenny Stabler. Evans played fine but Payton threw not 1 but 2 TD passes to Willie Gault while also running for 161 YD and 2 receptions for 27 as well. It was one of Payton’s finest games... unfortunately a loss 34-31, but I’ll never forget Payton’s performance that day!
