Someone on the Bills message board described Bates' role as this:

During last off-season the Bills indicated that Bates would be the primary backup at C rather than the jack of all trades role they had him in before. That’s why Bates was last off the bench in the guard rotation after Ford, Williams, Feliciano, and Boettger. He did perform well in very limited action. It is pretty clear to me, however, that Beane and the coaching staff do not see him as the long term answer at C, hence the extension of Morse, and does not see him as a starter at LG, hence the signing of Saffold. It would also appear they certainly do not have him penciled in RG as a starter, or they would have tendered him higher. So the Bills value him as a good role player and hence the $2.5 m offer.

That’s all we’ve signed to the oline two role players and a straight up bum.

There is an issue of scheme fit here as well. Bills ran a combination of man and zone. Bates is undersized and pretty much best in a zone scheme which is precisely why the Bears want him and why he fought for playing time with Ford, Williams, Feliciano, and Boettger. All of those guys are 320-330 compared to Bates being 300.

Gabriel appears correct here though. Bates clearly ended the season as the starter and the Bills who are tight against the cap likely tried to see if they could sneak him thru RFA.
Lets hope this end like the Cam saga did, with him switching teams.

Haven't even secured Bates yet.

But this is what good GM'ing looks like. It's foreign to Bears fans who've gotten used to winning in March only to see the team lose and/or disappoint when the actual games start. You'll get used to it eventually.

I think this is right. Buffalo runs a lot of gap power and most of their players are more built in that mold. Bates is not.
