For HHM,

Phil, what the latest on Marquess Wilson? And what role will he have when he returns?

Phil Emery:
Marquess has made continued progress and is well on his way to a full recovery. We will start his practice clock when he's recovered to the point that he's ready to play in a game within a 7-10 day timeframe.

Hello phil, do you think in next year's we should draft a young QB prospect? Just in Case it doesn't work with Trestman and Cutler?
12:40
Phil Emery: We're a team that constantly analyzes our needs. We continue to have a need for an influx of youth on our defense. We also have offensive areas where we want to create competition. I will say at this time based on what we have seen in games and practice we will be very interested in Jimmy Clausen and David Fales being with the Bears again next fall.

To those that were saying that Emery was like a breadth of fresh air in his answers to questions, looks like the honeymoon is over. He is now giving the basic scripted answers to every question just like every GM we have ever had, along with every GM in the league.

Jordan Mills was responsible for surrendering numerous pressures and penalties against Miami. Are you concerned about the right tackle position?
12:37
Phil Emery: Jordan is a good football player. His history with us has shown us that he will bounce back and rise to the occasion. We have trust and confidence in him.

Sunday on the radio was the first I've heard of this rotating captain thing Trestman has going. I understand his thinking behind it, I do - but it's time to move on from that.

Comment From Peter
What do you think about Trestman not having set Captains. Does this create confusion in the locker room on who the TRUE leaders are. I understand this gives others an opportunity to be captains but doesn't this seem more like everyone gets a participation trophy mentality instead of having to earn the leadership/respect role?

Phil Emery:
In 34 years in football post-college, I've seen captains handled in a wide variety of ways and I will say with certainly there is no one best way. I will also say with certainty that it's about the true character and quality of the person that becomes captain more than the honor behind being named captain. We have a wide variety of positive leadership o n this team, and although I'm not speaking for coach Trestman, I believe it is his way to reward those individuals that have shown outstanding leadership throughout the week of preparation leading into a game.

What are you guys expecting? He isn't going to throw Mills or Cutler or Tucker under the bus in an internet chat room.

Are you telling people can't be shocked or annoyed about the bears on the internet on a bears message board? Silly.

I'm thinking the Bears have people who need to be thrown under a bus.

If you think he is going to throw the QB he just signed to a huge contract under the bus publicly you have no idea how this works.

Since the question was probably not addressed, here is Emery's explanation of why Cutler was given a contract:

"With the franchise tag being so high for the quarterback position, to use it and not sign the individual to a long-term deal hurts the team because you lose the ability to prorate the amount of guaranteed salary over the length of the contract. Proration lowers the salary cap number in relation to that player's contract. Obviously the lower the number in relation to the salary cap, the more players you can sign to help your team reach its goals."

While this does make some sense, it's the draft picks and FA signings that should have Phil on the hot seat.

What are your thoughts on wasting a full minute of game clock to end the half vs. the Dolphins, when down by 2 scores? This is something Trestman has repeatedly done - rolled over before halftime. With the talent (and percentage of payroll) you and the Bears have dedicated to the offense, this is something that I will NEVER understand. You have the opportunity to score to end the half, and start the 2nd half with ball to try and score again. Outside of a fumble-six or a pick-six, this is the pinnacle of momentum swing opportunities in our league, and Trestman threw it away. The offense must be aggressive in those situations, and I believe that decision played a big role in costing us a victory this past Sunday.

Phil Emery:
There's a lot to your question and a lot to work through. But in an effort to boil it down and get to what you're asking, our coaches and our analytics staff meet on game management on a weekly basis, again the morning of the game and make adjustments throughout the game. There's a lot of effort and science put into the equation of managing game situations and time situations. Our coaches make the decisions at the given moment based on the information they have for the best possible outcome for our team. I believe that we have achieved the best possible outcome on a consistent basis.

This guy is in a world all his own.

I think it's just a nice way of saying if Jay is having a bad game they don't feel comfortable with him trying to push the ball down field.

Phil Emery: Jay Cutler is a winning quarterback in this league and no matter how you analyze the history of quarterbacks in the NFL, if you have a winning record you are an elite player at that position. I'll say it again: Jay has enormous skills and he continues to improve in all areas as a football player. I know he has some throws he would like to have back, but all of our players have had plays that they would like to have back.

Why would anyones head explode over that statement? Investing time in liking/hating any football player is an exercise in futility.
