The little nuances a good, seasoned base stealer can provide to the younger guys should reap a nice dividend. You have to steal on the pitcher at this level and Coleman will help them figure out what to look for, when and how. Also, getting into a good position to take an extra base in certain situations is of great value. I don't know Coleman, but if the tips he provides are anything like what I learned from other former MLBers, it's a good hire for the Sox.

they needed something because the past years guys couldn't steal because they had a hard time reading pitchers, they ran the bases like little leaguers. I hate that shit

I agree. I would also like to know what if any help a guy like Coleman could potentially give to the Sox pitchers. Base stealing goes both ways as in the ability to hold runners, how to pick off guys, what kind of "tells" baserunners have. It is a science in itself. As a former pitcher and pitching coach I can tell you that very few if any young pitchers get schooled in learning a good pick-off move or even how to hold runners. I was shitty at it because I had slow feet but what I was able to do was to quick pitch guys and hold the ball in order to frustrate guys.

I have to say, as a Cubs fan, I'm kind of jealous of this move. I wish the Cubs would bring in a base running specialist, especially to teach Castro how to run the bases. Castro's base running frustrates the heck out of me! I'm not talking base stealing, I'm talking about sliding fundamentals and crap you learn in the peewees. This is where I hope Maddon makes a difference for him. But nice hire for you guys.
