Sounds like Marquez is held up due to travel complications. Regardless it is nice to hear that he was even going to be ready to take part after his shoulder injury killed 2021.

They lit up Brickhouse.

I just can't wait for Suzuki and Villar to add to the line up.

Brennan Davis power is real. Oppo homerun. Thin air but cray the ball traveled over with that swing.

His first at bat was patient and struck out on a questionable strike 3.

I'm still wondering where he ends up playing. He was moved to RF last year. Then Jed Signs Suzuki and we know that he is a plus RF. Today he went to RF again. They are going to have to make a commitment because Davis and Suzuki are going to be the soul of the line up.

ROSTER MOVES
March 19: LHP Daniel Norris signed to one-year contract
Norris' deal with the Cubs is worth a reported $1.75 million, plus another $2 million available in incentives. The eight-year MLB veteran posted a 6.16 ERA last year in 56 games between stints with the Tigers and Brewers. In 57 innings, he struck out 38 and issued 30 walks. Norris gives the Cubs' bullpen an experienced lefty option. -- Jordan Bastian

March 19: LHP Drew Smyly signed to one-year contract
The Cubs brought the 32-year-old Smyly back into the fold with a one-year deal that includes a $4.25 million salary for 2022, plus a mutual option for '23 (with a $1 million buyout). The pact also includes $2.5 million available in incentives. Smyly rehabbed from Tommy John surgery with the Cubs in 2018, but was traded to Texas before the '19 season. Last year, the lefty had a 4.48 ERA in 29 games (23 starts) for Atlanta, picking up a World Series ring. He will be in the mix for a rotation spot but is also an option for the bullpen. -- Jordan Bastian

March 19: INF Jonathan Villar signed to one-year contract
Villar joins the Cubs via a one-year deal worth $6 million guaranteed ($4.5 million in '22 with a $1.5 million buyout in '23), and has a $10 million mutual option for next season. Last year with the Mets, the 30-year-old Villar hit .249/.322/.416 with 18 homers. The switch-hitter gives manager David Ross a versatile option for multiple infield positions, but third base looks like the best fit as a matchup player for the Cubs. -- Jordan Bastian

March 19: RHP Robert Gsellman signed to Minor League contract
Gsellman comes to Cubs camp as a non-roster invitee with a chance to make the club's Opening Day bullpen. The right-hander was limited to 17 games with the Mets last season due to a right lat injury. In those games, Gsellman logged a 3.77 ERA with 17 strikeouts against seven walks in 28 2/3 innings. -- Jordan Bastian

March 19: INF David Bote placed on 60-day injured list
Bote underwent offseason surgery on his left shoulder and is in the midst of a rehab process. The 28-year-old infielder hit .199 with eight homers, 35 RBIs and a .606 OPS in 97 games for Chicago last season in an injury-marred campaign. -- Jordan Bastian

March 19: RHP Tommy Nance placed on 10-day injured list
The Cubs announced that Nance was placed on the COVID-19-related IL, which opened up a 40-man roster spot for the time being. The righty appeared in 27 games last season for the Cubs, posting a 7.22 ERA. It was a tale of two seasons for Nance, who rose from independent ball to the Majors. He had a 0.64 ERA in his first 14 MLB games in '21, followed by a 13.50 ERA in his next 13 outings. -- Jordan Bastian
March 19: OF Nelson Velazquez optioned to Triple-A Iowa, INF Christopher Morel and RHP Alexander Vizcaíno optioned to Double-A Tennessee, OF Alexander Canario optioned to High-A South Bend
None of the prospects optioned were in the mix for the Cubs' Opening Day roster. Canario (No. 12), Vizcaíno (19), Morel (20) and Velazquez (29) are on MLB Pipeline's Top 30 Cubs prospects list. Velazquez was the Arizona Fall League's MVP and was added to the 40-man roster over the winter. As part of the roster moves, Vizcaíno was placed on MLB's restricted list, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster. -- Jordan Bastian

Simmons and Hoerner are in debate.

Wisdom and Villar in debate.

Schwindel is almost back from a back minor injury. Rivas most likely doesn't make the team

Frazier is not a lead off. He is hot in Azl. Don't mean squat.

My guess:

Madgral
Heyward
Suzuki
Happ
Schwindel
Villar
Contreras
Hoerner
Frazier

But I expects something of this nature until Happ is 100%>. Then it being used as needed. The DH is more of a rotation spot now vs a bat only. There are exceptions but the trend is more so rotational.

Meaning:

Happ LF
Heyward CF
Suzuki RF
Frazier Rotation guy.

Contreras C
Gomes Rotation guy

Villar 3B
Schwindel 1B
Wisdom rotation guy

Hoerner SS
Madgral 2B
Simmons rotation guy.

So for the most part the DH that day is the starter taking a feilding day off. That way the bat doesn't leave the line up.

It is the best way to approach the DH. Giving a guy 10-16M to never mitt up is questionable.

Yep. Mills tosses batting practice today.

A part of me is happy though.

Few more implosions and Ross is forced to start Steel in the rotation.

ROSTER MOVES

March 25: RHP Cory Abbott, OF Greg Deichmann optioned to Triple-A Iowa
Both Abbott and Deichmann got a taste of the Majors last season for the Cubs, and each offers a layer of depth. Abbott, 26, had 130 strikeouts in 96 innings at Triple-A Iowa last season and will serve as rotation depth. Deichmann, acquired at the 2021 Trade Deadline in the deal that sent lefty Andrew Chafin to Oakland, hit .274 with 34 extra-base hits, 61 walks and an .823 OPS in 94 games at Triple-A last year. -- Jordan Bastian
March 25: RHP Anderson Espinoza, LHP Brailyn Marquez optioned to Double-A Tennessee
Marquez, ranked by MLB Pipeline at No. 10 on the Cubs' Top 30 Prospects list, recently arrived to camp after a bout with COVID-19. The big lefty was not competing for an Opening Day roster spot, so he will transition to the Minor League side to continue to prep for his season. Espinoza was acquired last July in the trade that sent outfielder Jake Marisnick to the Padres. -- Jordan Bastian

March 25: OF Brennen Davis, RHP Ben Leeper, LHP Conner Menez, LHP Locke St. John, INF Chase Strumpf, INF Andy Weber, INF Dixon Machado reassigned to Minor League camp
Davis, the Cubs' No. 1 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, has the potential to break into the big leagues this summer, but he heads to the Minor League side to prepare for his regular season (with the likely destination of Triple-A Iowa to begin the year). Strumpf (No. 26) and Leeper (No. 28) are also on Pipeline's new Top 30 Cubs prospects list. -- Jordan Bastian
March 25: INF Esteban Quiroz acquired from Rays in exchange for OF Harold Ramirez
The Cubs swung a trade with Tampa Bay to reel the lefty-hitting Quiroz, who has played mostly second base in his three U.S. Minor League seasons with the Rays, Padres and Red Sox. Last season, the 30-year-old Quiroz hit .268 with 12 homers, 19 doubles, 43 walks and a .927 OPS in 68 games for Triple-A Durham. He spent the first seven years of his professional career in the Mexican League. Ramirez was an odd man out in the Cubs' outfield logjam, and only arrived to Spring Training on March 25 after visa issues delayed his travel from Colombia. The Cubs originally acquired Ramirez in a trade with Cleveland in November. -- Jordan Bastian
March 25: RHP Tommy Nance activated, designated for assignment
Nance appeared in 27 games last season for the Cubs, posting a 7.22 ERA. It was a tale of two seasons for the right-hander, who rose from independent ball to the Majors. He had a 0.64 ERA in his first 14 MLB games in '21, followed by a 13.50 ERA in his next 13 outings. -- Jordan Bastian

INJURY UPDATES

INF David Bote (left shoulder surgery)
Expected return:
TBD
Bote underwent a shoulder procedure in October, and the Cubs initially estimated a rehab period of at least six months. The utility man has been able to stay on a throwing program and has resumed light hitting and fielding drills this spring. Bote was placed on the 60-day injured list on March 19 and feels that two-month stay on the shelf should cover the time required for rehab and games buildup. Bote separated the same shoulder in late May. He returned from the IL before the end of July but sustained another setback late in the season. Bote hit .199 with eight homers, 35 RBIs and a .606 OPS in 97 games for Chicago last year. -- Jordan Bastian (Last updated: March 25)
1B Frank Schwindel (back tightness)
Expected return:
Day to day
Schwindel exited a March 20 Cactus League game after one at-bat because of what manager David Ross described as back tightness. On the morning of March 24, Schwindel said he was feeling better and had resumed hitting in the batting cage. Should he continue to progress, Schwindel could return to game action as soon as March 26. Schwindel projects to be Chicago's starting first baseman after hitting .342 with 13 homers, 19 doubles, 40 RBIs and a 1.002 OPS in 56 games down the stretch in 2021.

"[He's doing] good," Ross said. "He actually took swings, played catch today. Took a lot of swings, actually, and feels good. So, we'll see how he continues to progress. It's been really good the last two days." -- Jordan Bastian (Last updated: March 24)
OF Ian Happ (right elbow)
Expected return:
April
Happ was in the lineup for the Cubs as a designated hitter on March 23 for his spring debut. The outfielder underwent a "cleanup" procedure on his throwing elbow in February, but has resumed hitting and throwing. The hope is that he will be ready in time for Opening Day on April 7. Last year, Happ hit .226 with 25 homers and 66 RBIs in 148 games, but he turned it on late with a .319 average (1.045 OPS) in his final 45 games. Happ projects to be a starter for Chicago in left or center field.
"He's hitting the ground running. He's in a really good place," Cubs manager David Ross said. "It's nice to get him back in the lineup, and he'll continue to DH some, as his arm continues to bounce back. We'll get him at-bats on the Minor League side if he needs some. We want to make sure he gets going from both sides of the plate. We're going to follow that program the trainers have set forth and also push him where he feels like he can and stay healthy." -- Jordan Bastian (Last updated: March 23)

Ramirez for Esteban Quiroz, this is going to be a very underrated trade. Quiroz was second in all of AA last year in WRC+, he helps give power to the middle infield and a good DH option.

I really don't know much about the guy to be honest. Long term the Cubs need a long term 3B. As of right now James Triantos looks like he will be a stud and 3B is most likely his final destination. MBL loved him enough to make him the Cubs #3.

Well Smyly looked solid. That leaves Miley as the last starter to get a game in.

By no means is the rotation set yet. Stroman and Hendricks are pretty much a lock. Smyly pitches like that again you can ink him in. After that it is open and David might just play the match up vs a stable rotation until Miley is ready.

So it looks like Smyly is locked in for the #3 starter.

I believe today was a potential opening day line up. I'm not a fan of Heyward but w/e. Happ is still on the cold side of hot or not.

So I believe this is what David is planning on being the main squad. But nothing is ever set in stone.

Kimbrel historically is a slow starter if I remember correctly. It will take time for him to feel in the grove..

Sounds like Ross is signaling Simmons starting the season on the DL. It opens up a roster spot for Vargas. Vargas lacks options and would be left open to other teams. He has been one of the best hitters this spring and is a poor time to push him through.
