This is the correct answer, you don't run and hide from your problems, you behave as an adult, you stand up for yourself and in a straight forward but respectful manner you clear things up. You made some enemies, but you can fix this, please don't let your past mistakes define you, choose to be a decent human, make the conscious decision to right your wrongs, you will be surprised to see how forgiving people can be when given the chance.
It really is that simple, man up, apologize for the horrible things you have said, these people were your friends, they can be again, just take the first step.
