For people to understand how something like this can happen, there was a play many a moon ago where Walter Payton took a run up the gut and got tackled after a short gain.

In his normal fashion, he bounced back up and ran to the huddle. The defense jumped all over the ball which was on the ground and the ref called it a fumble and gave the ball to the defense.

Payton ran to the ref and touched him to get his attention, telling him that he had gotten tackled and had bounced back up. The ref threw a flag and kicked him out of the game for shoving an official.

If it can happen to Sweetness, it can happen to anybody.

I do remember that play/game. Believe it was against Atlanta and very near to the goal line!

I wonder if the Bears' clause takes back some of Smith's "Guarenteed money" only if the NFL suspends him, or if they can snatch it if Smith is merely ejected?

A sole referee can unjustly eject a player. That alone shouldn't lose guarenteed money.
Poles low balling smith is what’s happening
