If this staff is smart you basically give Jones some basic deep routes and then some underneath routes that look like deep routes. Teams will have to respect his deep speed and Fields deep accuracy and the cushion they give means Jones can then catch passes underneath with space to use that YAC ability

Yeah, it would be nice to see if we have a coaching staff that understands how to develop players and put them in positions that actually play to their strengths.

The guy is explosive. I see some Deebo in him too. Despite being a little older, this guy could turn out to be a steal.

Not horrified by the pick.

Would have preferred David Bell, who is more productive, but I could see Jones being very dangerous on play-fakes to Montgomery/Herbert.

This doesn't help one of the older rosters in the NFL ?

Dude can’t crack lineup at USC, transfers to UT where he doesn’t do much until he’s 24 and playing against 19 year olds. Yeahhhh, this is going to turn out spectacular.

He will be a nice special teams player, though

So after mulling over this pick for a while if I had only watched the highlights of him I'd be excited. (I'm not going to pretend I'm breaking down all 22 tape or anything) But just watching some clips of the guy it's clear as day he's fast as fuck. He can go deep. He can turn short plays into long plays. Just watching the tape and knowing nothing else I'd be all about this pick.

The negatives are really the stuff not on tape: his age and lack of prior production to last year. If he was 20 years old coming off his Jr year we'd probably be super excited. We shall see. There's enough on tape for me to look forward to seeing what he can do. It's just the ancillary stuff giving me pause. Which I guess is better than me watching his tape and going "yeah this kid sucks". That's not the case at all.

Jalen Tolbert or even Khalil Shakir would have been BPA at WR.

Getsy better believe he's more than just a returner and he's our Deebo.

A huge reach until proven otherwise but like I said yesterday, at least it's not Tyquan Thornton in the 2nd...

Why was it a reach? Because the media told you it was?

(I’ll answer for you…. Yes it was)
I agree. It wasn’t really a reach.

They got a WR that can score the moment the ball’s in his hands. They also got a great returner.

They’ve been low key looking for this type of player. I thought it’d be Calvin Austin III, but I’m happy with him.

I know.

Note that its the same people ripping their dicks off now who also, when you say something like "Yeah, you're being an ass." and leave it at that, will go on for 15 pages that you "had a meltdown".

Its like someone combined douchebro with drama queen, sprinkled in attention whore and then applied a liberal dose of Rupaul level cattiness, and we ended up with these completely non-self aware dick rippers.....
Are you seriously saying the you are happy with this draft so far? I mean don't get me wrong I am sure the 2 DBs are going to be fine players, but c'mon man! We have no shot at winning the Super Bowl, the Bears aren't even a fucking playoff team next season. The most important thing is finding out if Justin Fields is a franchise QB period. Your happy about fielding a fucking defense, seriously? Ryan Pace, who was a bad GM according to consensus , turned one of the worst Ds into a top D in 2 seasons. We need to find our identity and that starts with finding out if Fields is the guy. I hope Justin is a good QB, but I dont know.. NOBODY knows yet, and likely we wont know at the end of next season thanks to Poles. We could of had Pickens, one of the most talented WR in one of the most WR talented drafts, but we double downed on DBs. Its unbelievable.

Reasons for optimism:

He’s clearly trending in the right direction. He appeared to gain his footing as a receiver after transferring, and he likely would’ve had a better college career if he had been in that system from the beginning. He’s twitchy, and he’s fast.

Reasons for concern:

He had 11 touchdowns in 6 years of college ball. He never had more than 280 yards receiving until his sixth year in college. Maybe a few more years in college, he could’ve hit 1,000 yards. If it took him six years of college to get 300 yards in a season, how long will it take him to become an effective NFL receiver?

Hate the pick. We don’t have the resources to get cute, poles ruined an otherwise good day 2. There were more productive receivers available with hands , route running, production and not eligible for AARP. . And HELLO OT?

I hope he proves me wrong.

He’s bad at route running and catching the football cleanly with his hands, but he’s great at running with the ball.

Basically a kick/punt returner and gadget player in on offense.

I’d be shocked if he ever becomes a productive NFL receiver.

Yeah I mean if the first 2 picks are BPA overall then you change the strategy and get cute with a niche scheme pick?

Very Angeloesque draft so far.

For WR, I would have wanted David Bell from Perdue. A guy who produces.

But is Jones a bad choice? At worst, they have a superb return specialist. Not on par with Devin Hester, but the Cordarrelle Patterson comps are intriguing. I always wondered why nobody used Patterson on punt returns as well - that could settle one spot, and help Fields.

In addition, at 6', 204 pounds, he could also be worked in as a 3rd RB, the way Patterson is. He's the replacement for Tarik Cohen. Some WR (in the slot), explosive return man, and a not-so-bad RB.

Bell is 50/50 at best to produce in the NFL. Size isn’t going to make you a good player by itself…

These guys spend their lives studying this stuff. It’s literally their freaking job. And they still miss all the time. The draft is an inexact science. The only thing for sure is that nobody really knows anything. It’s been proven over and over again. You know how many impact guys won’t even get drafted? So what would motivate any of you to be so passionate about your opinions? You don’t know shit. Nobody really does.

It’s funny reading guys on here being like “I had him going later.” Like I’m supposed to believe you’re sitting at home studying thousands of hours of college tape of guys and putting together a board like you’re Mel Kiper Jr lol. I understand some guys here are knowledgable about the game. Played or coached. They have some level of competence when it comes to understanding football. But to take it to the point where you’re actually mad about draft picks like you know a damn thing is laughable and almost cringeworthy in it’s naïveté. You dont know shit. Shut up and let it play out.
