In reading through some of the various threads and articles lately, I was thinking about what the roster could or would look like just based on position.

My initial assumption is that the offense and defense will be evenly divided. So, after the 3 specialists, you have 25 offensive and 25 defensive players on the 53 man roster. Although last year, the 2018 opening day roster actually had 26 on defense and 24 on offense.

3 specialists - kicker, punter, long snapper

Offense:
2 quarterback
4 runningback
1 fullback
6 wide receivers
4 tight ends
8 offensive linemen

Defense:
6 defensive linemen
4 inside linebackers
5 outside linebackers
6 cornerbacks
4 safeties

In 2018, the Bears started with only 3 runningbacks and then had 10 linebackers, otherwise those were the numbers they had by position.

For 2019, I think it will be interesting to see if they keep a fullback or not. With the potentially strong receiving core, will they keep 7 wr and drop the fullback? It's not uncommon for teams to use a tight end to fill the fullback role for the few times a game it may be needed. Do any of the Bears tight ends have that lead blocking skillset? If they think they can stash Whyte on the practice squad, do they open 2019 with just 3 runningbacks again?

On defense, I think/hope there will be some pretty strong battles at outside linebacker depth and the defensive back depth. Beyond Mack, Floyd, and Lynch, I think those last couple of OLB spots are wide open. Neither Irving or Fitts really stood out last year, can they be replaced by any of the UDFA? And I will be interested to see if both of the drafted db's can make the 53 man roster.

So 4 RB's and a fullback and 6 WR's which means one of E.Hall or J.Wims doesn't make it, unless they list C.Patterson at another position but don't think they'd do that.

Roster locks: 39 (18 O/ 18 D/ 3 ST)

QB: Trubisky, Daniel (2)
RB: Cohen, Monty, Davis (3)
WR: Robinson, Miller, Gabriel, Ridley, Patterson (5)
TE: Burton, Shaheen (2)
OL: Leno, Daniels, Whitehair, Long, Massie, Sowell (6)

S: Jackson, Dix, Bush (3)
CB: Fuller, Prince, Skrine, Shelley, Tolliver (5)
DL: Hicks, Goldman, RRH, Nichols (4)
ILB: Trevathan, Smith, Iggy (3)
OLB: Mack, Floyd, Lynch (3)

Probable: 8

Wims (WR), Braunecker (TE), Coward (OL), DHC (S), McManus (CB), Bullard (DL), Kwit (ILB), Irving (OLB)

47 (21 O/ 23 D/ 3 ST) total between “Locks” and “Probable.”

That leaves 6 spot open for Whyte, Hall, Raymond, Bars, KPL, Fitts, Denmark and probably another OL.

Is it normal to only have 6 or 7 guys on the roster for o-line? I don't know anything about Alex Bars, but that seems a little light. And defensive line? Only 4 locks on a 3-4?

There's two Halls in the mix, the Hall WR signed from Atl. Who's KPL?

Yep, it's impossible to answer those questions without seeing how they do in preseason. If Whyte looks really good Returning, they probably don't risk PS cause there were only a few KRs last year to avg 25yds/Return or more. It's guessing. Plus these guys, the new ones, have to show something on ST if they want to make the 53.

It really doesn't matter where they list Patterson (I bet will be WR). They won't mind having 7 WR or more (there's no restrictions) if the guys are ST producers... they'll be game-day active.

They probably keep 8 OL and 5-6 DL on the 53. 7 OL and 5 DL usually dress.

The ILB we just signed who played with the Jets last year. Kevin Pierre Louis.

I was unfamiliar with Alex Bars as well. I was encouraged by the things I read, and his 2017 highlights. Some had as early as 4th round projections on him. Has injured knee. I don’t belive he was able to participate in rookie mini camp

Well damn, I just read that Michael Burton is signing with the Saints. Apparently, he has been a free agent this offseason and I totally missed that. If that is the case, then I really do not see the Bears having a fullback on their 53 man roster. So, that definitely makes it easier to see the Bears either keeping 4 runningbacks or 7 wide receivers. Or, maybe an extra linebacker or DB for special teams.
