In reading through some of the various threads and articles lately, I was thinking about what the roster could or would look like just based on position.
My initial assumption is that the offense and defense will be evenly divided. So, after the 3 specialists, you have 25 offensive and 25 defensive players on the 53 man roster. Although last year, the 2018 opening day roster actually had 26 on defense and 24 on offense.
3 specialists - kicker, punter, long snapper
Offense:
2 quarterback
4 runningback
1 fullback
6 wide receivers
4 tight ends
8 offensive linemen
Defense:
6 defensive linemen
4 inside linebackers
5 outside linebackers
6 cornerbacks
4 safeties
In 2018, the Bears started with only 3 runningbacks and then had 10 linebackers, otherwise those were the numbers they had by position.
For 2019, I think it will be interesting to see if they keep a fullback or not. With the potentially strong receiving core, will they keep 7 wr and drop the fullback? It's not uncommon for teams to use a tight end to fill the fullback role for the few times a game it may be needed. Do any of the Bears tight ends have that lead blocking skillset? If they think they can stash Whyte on the practice squad, do they open 2019 with just 3 runningbacks again?
On defense, I think/hope there will be some pretty strong battles at outside linebacker depth and the defensive back depth. Beyond Mack, Floyd, and Lynch, I think those last couple of OLB spots are wide open. Neither Irving or Fitts really stood out last year, can they be replaced by any of the UDFA? And I will be interested to see if both of the drafted db's can make the 53 man roster.
