@fatbeard I got back into XCOM 2 over the last 4-5 days, way farther into the campaign.

These Ruler enemies showing up in random missions is really fucking weird.

I will bring a squad of my lower level like Squaddie-Sgt types on a mission, fight my way thru to near the end, then the fucking Beserker Queen shows up at the end lol.

Have you dealt with this?

No, I decided to keep playing with the integrated DLC option, and I haven't hit any of the facilities that trigger them to start appearing randomly. I'm not gonna tackle them until I've got full magnetic weapons and predator armor, and the full squad unlock. I'm almost there, and by now my guys have enough firepower and abilities that I feel like I can recover from mistakes or bad RNG.

A tip I'll throw at you since I had no clue while fighting them....

Those Ruler bosses have a shitload of health, but they will open a portal and run away once you get them under half health.

The tip is... you'll see them again with the same reduced health, they won't heal.... so if you don't get them the first time it is not only ok, but often I aim for just getting them to retreat before they can damage my squad, then I focus on the mission at hand and resolve to finish off the Ruler the next time they pop up.

I spent too much time thinking I had to kill them the first time I saw them.

I knocked off my first facility last night. I kept putting it off thinking it would be a giant slog and I hadn't research any of the special weapons. I got the berserker queen, and spent god-knows-how-many minutes carefully plotting out my moves and options to deal with her reactions.

My specialist with a repeater executed her on the first shot.

Lmao aint that the way of it with XCOM tho?

Careful chess-like moves.... then some random shit just makes w/e you were doing pointless.

@fatbeard have you fought any Sectopods?

Their unintended destruction of the environment around them is cracking me up.

I went to raid an alien facility, found one inside.... first move it does it runs thru a giant wall, bulldozes thru all the alien machinery in the middle of the room, clips a balcony on the 2nd level leaving a giant hole in the ceiling/wall, and finally bulldozes thru yet another wall to reach its intended destination.

The 2 Advent soldiers behind the Sectopod like "For fucks sake Gary...."

Btw I finished the original XCOM2 campaign over the weekend.

I had never played XCOM before, so I was learning on the job.... using saves way more than I ordinarily would.

I started a 2nd campaign with the intention to play thru without any savescumming.

And holy fuck do people die alot when you don't fix XCOM's fucked up shot mechanics with saves lol.

I love the turns where you methodically move your squad into place, set all but one up on Overwatch, then ambush the Advent with an AOE or a big sniper shot.... and every, single, shot, misses these soldiers who are standing out in the open running for cover.... then they proceed to crit 2 out of 3 from distance with your soldiers in cover.

There's a reason my first Colonel was and will be a Sniper lol...

Finally finished horizon zero dawn. Been busy so couldn’t commit to it like that. The original story line is pretty cool. Game play was awesome. Frozen wild was ok but not as good as original story.

up next I Ordered days gone. Idk what to expect from this game. I might even buy world war z cause ps store has it on sale for 1199

I finished my Commander/Ironman campaign. Had a lot of fun, but the biggest gripe I have is that the game felt really stale past midgame when I had enough firepower & abilities to just alpha strike every single pod on activation. I got to the point where cover didn't matter so long as I could bring everything to bear on one pod per turn. I went the whole game without ever seeing alien abilities because they never lived that long, which was really lame. It got to the point where I was intentionally pulling 2-3 pods at the end just to challenge myself.

I'm gonna change it up this time around and try the Beta Strike option. That should be a lot more fun, IMO.

I didn't realize that XCOM2 original and WOTC are basically the same campaign with WOTC adding a bunch of new content and features which make the game feel complete.

I played two XCOM2 vanilla campaigns and kept wondering wtf was the point of recruiting more than like 8-10 soldiers and 1-2 SPARKs.... once you find a combo that works and level up, you just bring your best squad every mission and use the same gear and same tactics.

I am early in my first WOTC campaign.... squad training, unit bonding/cohesion, covert missions, more enemy diversity including new factions.... It is like XCOM2 vanilla was Alpha/Beta and WOTC is actually their 1.0 release.

At least in WOTC it feels like time spent building a farm system and a well-planned Avenger is worth something.

Definitely going to have to do some manual .ini tweaking to get Beta Strike balanced. It doesn't buff civilian or resistance HP for example, so I ran my first retaliation mission...took twice as long to kill the aliens, as expected, but they were one-shotting everyone else while I dealt with them. Ended up with only two civilians left, and I don't even want to think about what would happen when Chryssalids show up...

I just finished TLoU2.

Don't get the hate that the game received. I think I may have liked it a bit more than the first game. But I also could be a prisoner of the moment.

I wasn't happy with some things that happened in the story, but I also understand it. Hard to talk about it without spoilers haha
