The curious case of Devin Aromashodu

From late season star last season to having a team-high 10 targets against the Lions and catching 5 balls for 71 yards, Devin Aromashodu barely played on offense against the Cowboys. Despite being one of Jay Cutler’s favorite targets, Aromashodu had a few drops, including an over the shoulder grab that would’ve a touchdown. There’s been no report of an injury, no report of Aromashodu violating any team rules or any suspension.

Aromashodu was replaced by Earl Bennett in three-receiver sets, relegating DA to play solely on special teams. Bennett, who had recovered from a lingering hamstring injury, caught 5 passes for 29 yards against the Cowboys and made the crucial blocks on Greg Olsen’s 39 yard touchdown catch.

It remains to be seen if Devin Aromashodu will regain his starting job, but his drops have seem to have put him in Mike Martz’s doghouse. It’s worth noting though that Bennett is more of a slot receiver, while DA practiced in all 3 receiver positions in training camp. It’s a large fall from grace after he had 24 receptions for 298 yards and 4 TDs in four games, including the dramatic game-ending touchdown in overtime against the Vikings in Week 16.

It’ll likely take a complete face plant from one of the starters for Aromashodu to become a starting receiver again. But I believe he’ll regain his starting job at some point, given that he’s the Bears’ tallest wide receiver and his rapport w/ Cutler. As for when, only Lovie and the coaching staff know.

At the beginning of preseason/training camp there was a dispute between Martz and Lovie over who was the #1 receiver with Martz calling D.A. the #1. Could his demotion be related to this feud?
