The Bears weren’t in the mood for suspense when it came to their option on linebacker Leonard Floyd‘s contract for the 2020 season.
General Manager Ryan Pace indicated in January that the team planned to exercise that option. Field Yates of ESPN reports that the team has now officially picked it up.
May 3 is the deadline for teams to exercise options on the contracts of their 2016 first-round picks. The options are guaranteed against injury only, so the Bears could still opt to part ways with Floyd ahead of the 2020 league year without being on the hook for around $13 million.
Floyd has 15.5 sacks over his first three seasons and played in every game for the Bears last year for the first time since being drafted.

Based on what some less than super productive pass rushers got paid this offseason, 13 million for Floyd is a solid deal.

Yeah but i was hoping they'd get him to sign a multi year deal for like 3-4 years and get him a little cheaper then the $13 mil for his option. I guess they still can do that. It will be good to see how Pagano uses him and how he fits in Pagano's system even though there's not supposed to be too big a difference from what Pagano does to what Fangio did except that i don't think he'll be dropping back in coverage as much.

Glad they optioned him, while he may not be a superstar pass rusher, he was asked to set the edge and cover last year, he did that and occasionally got after the QB. Very well rounded player, and while he might not have completely lived up to his draft position, he turned out to be a very good player.

He is the poster boy for value other than pass rushing based on a pass rushing position.

I suspect he is on the team because he can do some dirty things that other pass rushing specialists cant do.

Honestly I don't think he is worth that much money, but I guess the Bears don't want the drama next year of trying to keep him.

He has been awesome run stopper. Funny thing is that was suppose to be his weakness lol. As a pass rusher we can just call him almost cause he just almost a good pass rusher. What does that translate into salary? Was hoping 10 mil a year but we saw average pass rushers getting 15 mil derp

When healthy he's a really valuable player.

My guess is they are working on contracts for Floyd and Whitehair right now that are long term and would provide some cap relief.

The option just gives them leverage in the negotiation because he is a year further from free agency.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't we use the remaining cap we have this season as well to extend whitehair?

Probably why he kept a good amount of cap. I think we still have something like $16-$17 mil left or something around that.

Yes. I think they are going to at a minimum extend Whitehair, use the 1 remaining year on his contract to lower the total cap hit. Bump his salary to 4-5 million this season.

Floyd is a little trickier because his cap hits are already much higher than Whitehair.
