Seriously I think people looked at their similar 40 times and said "yep they are the same back". This is Special person. They are completely different runners.

Howard was a straight up traditional power back, tries to run over defenders, lower his head into contact, north south runner, rarely targeted in passing game. Very little horizontal shiftiness.

Montgomery runs with significant horizontal shiftiness, making sharp cuts and generally trying to make a defender miss first instead of trying to run him over. Won't hesitate to bounce it outside. Will stop/start. Significantly more dynamic runner, but definitely less powerful.

They really have 2 completely different styles. Honestly you could put Howard and Cohen on opposite ends of the RB spectrum and find Montgomery in the middle.

I am not saying the Montgomery is the next coming. I think he is a much better fit because of his ability to contribute in the passing game and I am excited about that.

But seriously folks you can't just look at a combine number and say players are similar.

Leveon Bell averaged 4.7 yds/carry his final season of college and only 5 yds/carry in college. He’s probably the best running back in the league. It’s unfortunate that your entire argument could crumble that easily. It’s also unfortunate that anyone is using yds/carry as they obviously don’t know anything about the team he played on.

So I just went through the top 20 RB's (in yards) last year and of those 20 RB's only one had a career college average below 4.7 yards. Peyton Barber of the Bucs. Who also happened to have the lowest YPC of any of those top 20 RB's. (tied with JHow at 3.7 YPC)

Most RB's seemed to average 6 yards or more. Definitely 5+ yards.

I think it would be interesting to see how many recent good NFL RBs averaged 4.7 YPC or less in college like Montgomery did. That is going to be a REALLY short list.

Even though people have already posted examples, I wouldn't care if there weren't any. I don't think I've ever seen a power conference offensive line as bad as Iowa State's the last 2 seasons.
