Where did you get the draft class impact? With no first or second round picks, I assume there is virtually no cap impact. If one of our picks signs and makes the team, their league minimum salary just replaces another league minimum guy currently on the roster.

Can we convert any of Mack's money into his signing bonus instead? Not a cap guy

The only guys that count against the salary cap for the offseason are your top 51 guys on the salary chart.

Guys who make less than a 7th round pick most of the time do not count against the salary cap.

Currently every single player on the Bears roster will count against the cap because they only have 51 guys under contract right now heading into free agency and the draft. 52 with Massie.

The Bears need to sign about 13 veteran players that will push the bottom guys off the top 51. When they do that they will get the money from those guys coming back onto the functional cap.

46 veterans
5 draft picks

16 Past UDFA, CFL signings, PR guys, Super Minimum Players [less than 4 year min]
23 UDFA

I added up all the 2018 cap hits from last years guys in roughly those spots.

The Bears veteran signings and draft picks will push about 8.7 million off of the books as guys like Tolliver and Gentry will be on the team but not count against the cap.

True Functional Budget After Obvious Cuts: 20-22 million budget

15.5 million can be converted and pro rated over the next 6 years including 2019.

15.5/6

2.6 added per year

15.5-2.6=12.9 saved

But that is risky business.

The Bears currently have 14-16 million in cap space, depending on the cap which is estimated between 189-191 million.

Current Debits

1. Howard and Kwiatkoski earned playing time bonues for 1.3 million each, total -2.6.

Never heard of this before, is this standard in nfl contracts? 1.3 mill is double their base salaries

The draft picks make more than the league minimum guys.

3[87] 660k
4. 636k
5. 570K
7.500k
7. 500k

Sorry it is 2.75 million, 3.5 million was with a Howard trade. I will update the numbers.

We are a young team with allot of rookie deals that need to be redone in next few years so it won’t be an ideal situation adding those payments to future cap.

They have to really want to go for it like rams did this season to justify doing this but you’re selling out just for next season and “could” hurt future years

20 million/13 veterans needed=1.5 million per signing

So if we want to bring Amos back at a 4-5 1st cap hit that is 3x what we have budgeted which means that you need to go ultra cheap in other spots.

The NFL brought in the Vet Minimum Benefit deal a few years ago to help veteran players who are at the bottom of the roster.

Essentially as long as they do not get any bonus money amounting to more than 80k they can get paid their vet minimum 1 year deal, but only count as if they were a 2nd round rookie.

Bryan Witzmann

4 year vet minimum: 790k, this is what he gets in cash.
2 year vet minimum: 550k, this is what he counts for the Bears.

Essentially you save 240k on the salary cap, but he still gets the minimum he has earned.

I should add the Bears have 3 ERFA on the team and all 3 should be resigned. That is 3 veterans off the list at a total cost of 1.9 million.

Irving

Really it is 18 million for 10 veterans or 1.8/signing.

The Vet Minimum Benefit Cap Hit this season is: 560k

You still save 245k as the vet min for each year rises 15k.

Yes, i posted a article about it like a week ago in another thread. They could take $11 mil and convert it to a signing bonus is what it said in the article.

As i always say.....there's always ways for GM's to create more cap space when it's needed.

Pace will probably approach Trevathan about an extension. Tear up current deal and give him 3 years past this one. Roll up some cap savings into the bonus structure. You can't go status quo with Kyle Long. It's either cut him or restructure with pay cut.

Yes also isn't your spending averaged over 3 years? You can technically go over as long as your 3 year average meets the cap correct?

You cannot go over in any year.

The 4 year window is the spending floor. You cannot go below it over 4 years. Every 4 years you must have spent 80 percent of the cap. The current window is 2017-2020.
