@TheCCO: Kris Bryant just hit a solo HR to right center in the top of the 4th inning. Bryant's 12th HR with Iowa and No. 34 on the season #Cubs

Baez follows suit in the 4th with a 3 run jack himself. 20th on the year.

I'm expecting some waver cuts in Aug. Schierholtz and Bonifacio if they are not traded. Same situation Barney went through.

I haven't been very high on Soler, but man he is mashing the ball lately. He can't be worse than Sweeney.

I have been. His main knock was his injury concerns. He has plate discipline, and that is something the Cubs can always use. Oh, and the power thing and high OBP won't hurt either.

Plate discipline and high OBP will make him look out of place in this organization. Those are things we sorely need. Can't wait to see him play regularly.

Scwharber, Almora and Mickinney (sp) seem to fit that model as well.

Chris Valaika expected to make hometown debut with Cubs
August 1, 2014, 9:30 am

Chris Valaika will be surrounded by plenty of family and friends as he's expected to make his Cubs debut during the upcoming series against the Dodgers.

The Los Angeles-area native was pulled from Thursday's Triple-A game and will be in uniform as the Cubs kick off their three-game series on the West Coast.

Valaika's hitting .278/.344/.423 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 352 at-bats with Triple-A Iowa. He played in 19 spring training games with the Cubs this season.

The 28-year-old infielder played 22 games with the Miami Marlins last season, hitting .219 with a home run and nine RBI.

Minors totals:
Going with hitters only. Alcantara was ranked #4 but he is on the team and I'm not counting him.

#1 Bryant 393 AB .338/.439/.684 35 HR 90 RBI
#2 Baez 378 AB .259/.317/.500 21 HR 78 RBI
#3 Russell 151 AB .298/.365/.490 7 HR 24 RBI
#4 Almora 402 AB .276/.301/.398 8 HR 53 RBI
#5 Soler 111 AB .387/.481/.784 9 HR 32 RBI
#6 Schwarber 159 AB .352/.443/.616 10 HR 36 RBI
#7 McKinney 377 AB .257/.347/.414 11 HR 56 RBI
#8 Vogelbach 381 AB .276/.368/.436 12 HR 58 RBI
#9 Caratini 323 AB .279/.352/.406 5 HR 42 RBI
#10 Candelario 359 AB .212/.277/.370 10 HR 50 RBI

I'm seeing Jimenez getting into the top 10 next year. He is still young at 17 but his 6'4" frame give a big potential power growth.
Stats: 86 AB .244/.301/.395 2 HR 14 RBI. but BB% 8.1% SO% 19.8. He keeps those levels as he develops while he grows into his power he should become a solid OF.

Other project is Gleyber Torres another 17 YO SS.
100 AB .280/.383/.400 1 HR 17 RBI. Interesting numbers so far but it may relate to the lack of pitching at his level 18% BB and 24% SO. As the pitching gets better those 2 stats should play into his development more.

@TheCCO Bryant just hooked a 97mph fastball foul and followed it up by squaring up the next one at 99 for a 2-run HR to LCF.

@IowaCubsGameDay: I-Cubs win 9-2! Vitters, Soler, Whiteside, and Bryant all go deep as Iowa takes 4 of 5 from the Zephyrs!

I also see where the Zephyr's have rule 5 and former Cubs prospect Justin Bour who is doing rather well at AAA to the tune of a .309 AVG, 13 HR's and an impressive .389 OBP.

38 SO's to 33 BB's in 269 plate appearances is pretty good. He obviously has a patient approach at the plate and could be a utility, to spot-starter player in the majors and with the right team, maybe a little more than that.

@CarrieMuskat: Martinez, acquired from #Dodgers in Barney trade, gave up 1 R on 3 H for @KCCougars. Caratini 2 H, 3 RBIs. #Cubs

Good start for the 2 recent new guys...

Seems like same posts daily, so i will specify that this is for Sunday, 8/3.

Baez with a 1st inning HR.

And dare I say, per @TheCCO: Mike Olt is batting .333/.348/.533 (15-for-45) with 6 2B, HR, BB, 13 K and a .881 OPS in 12 games with .861 OPS.
Admittedly, that's a small sample size. But it is such a far cry from his MLB performance I think it is good to see.

On the other hand, maybe that just tells us what difference there is between MLB and AAA and we should temper expectations of the young guys a bit.

Baez is 2 for 2 with 2 solo shots and a walk

Pierce Johnson has been stellar for awhile. 6 innings of 0 run ball. His ERA is now down to 2.71.

Addison Russell hit his 8th on the year.

I think the other hand is correct. My guess is one of these guys comes up and plays at a high level, but I have serious doubts about 2 of them let alone 3+. I know being bad for years and focusing on the minors makes people on this board overstate the young kids, but I hope people still remember about how small a percentage of even top prospects actual turn into 10 year starters.
