(i) If the player accepts an offer from a

New Club in respect of that year of the contract which the Prior

Club has walked-away from that is less than 80% of the award for

such year, the Prior Club may, within seven (7) days after the

date it receives the applicable Offer Sheet, elect to match the

offer of the New Club and the Player and the Prior Club shall

enter into a Player Contract on those terms and conditions;
Won't happen - but boy wouldn't that be a thing of beauty if Niemi is forced to sign with the Hawks for less than what the Hawks offered. Even better if Doug Wilson signs Niemi to a low contract deal and the Hawks match it and take him back as a backup. We'd get revenge on all 3 at once - Niemi, Zito, and Wilson.

Nope, you are incorrect. Less than 80% of the arbitrated amount the Hawks can resign him.

Rosh is correct. Go to the bottom of the link you provided and you'll find the following...

(e) The dollar amount of $550,000 set forth in each of

paragraphs (a) and (b) above, shall be increased on an annual

basis at the same percentage rate of increase as the Average

League Salary, with the commencement of the 1996/97 League Year

being the first year such increase shall take effect.
By way of

example, if the Average League Salary on June 30, 1996 has

increased by 10% from the Average League Salary on June 30, 1995,

then the figure of $550,000 stated in paragraphs (a) and (b)

above, shall be increased by 10% on June 30, 1996, and the

ability of a Club to walk-away from an arbitration award rendered

after June 30, 1996, shall be adjusted accordingly. For each

League Year thereafter, a similar comparison and adjustment shall

be made.

That is the old CBA.

If that were the scenario (Turco & Niemi), I'd rather start with Niemi in net and Turco as backup.

So is there any situation where Niemi is allowed to sign here this year?

Sure. He accepts like...1M per season, and is our backup?

 Back on page 25:

Apparently, this used to be the rule, but was eliminated in the new CBA.

The old CBA had this provision at 12.6(c)(1) http://www.nhlfa.com/CBA/cba_agreement12.asp

The current CBA does not seem to have any such provision: http://www.nhlpa.com/About-Us/CBA/

Sorry for the confusion. And if any of you like to nerd out and actually read this thing, make sure you're looking at the correct version. That nhlfa.com site only seems to have the 1995 CBA.

Oh, and the Doug Wilson move did have the desired affect he intended. We know that but to hear it from someone on the inside makes it more interesting. The comment about the unwritten rule of what GM's do and don't do also came up.
Weren't some people claiming that the "desired affect" was to force the hawks to match thereby allowing the Sharks to sign Niemi? that's what i remember reading...

Could still be. They are over the cap if they signed Niemi and would have to make a move.

You think Nittymokin will take them to the Promise land? Greiss? Wilson will be fired half way through the year with either of those guys in net as the starter.

There's a lot of time for him to sign Niemi. Last I checked October was two months away.

Not an opinion, just stating what I was told by those on the inside.
