After a year in the new division and conference alignments it's interesting to look back and consider some of the odd conference alignments of the past. People were amazed that the Jets had to spend a season in the east, but many people forget that the Canucks once played in the eastern conference while the Flyers were in the west! (1970-1974)
The Leafs also played in the west for years wanting to move east.
So the Jets playing in the east is not the most bizarre geographic alignment by a wide margin.
People are also pondering the implications of the new division rivals for the Hawks, thinking that we've ALWAYS been in the same division as Detroit. However, for most of the 1970's the Hawks were not in the same division as Detroit. That got me thinking about who has been in our division over the years and I found after a bit of looking around on HockeyDB.com that we've had 27 different divisional rivals since the great expansion of 1967, and there are only 7 current teams that have not been in our division at some point in their franchise's history. It certainly looks like most of our new divisional foes could be comes huge rivals the likes of our former relationship with the Northstars and Red Wings.

Here's the list I built:
(All of the original 6 were in the same division from 1967-1970 after the great expansion)
1. Boston Bruins
2. Detroit Red Wings
3. MontrealCanadiens
4. New York Rangers
5. Toronto Maple Leafs
6. St. Louis Blues
7. Philadelphia Flyers
8. Minnesota Northstars (Now the Dallas Stars)
9. LosAngeles Kings
10. Pittsburgh Penguins
11. California Golden Seals
12. Atlanta Flames
13. Vancouver Canucks
14. Kansas City Scouts
15. Colorado Rockies (Now the New Jersey Devils)
16. Edmonton Oilers
17. Winnipeg Jets (First version, now the Phoenix Coyotes)
18. Hartford Whalers (Now the Carolina Hurricaines)
19, Tampa Bay Lightning
20. Dallas Stars (Formerly the Minnesota Northstars)
21. Phoenix Coyotes (1995) (Formerly the Winnipeg Jets)
22. Colorado Avalanche (Formerly the Quebec Nordiques)
23. Minnesota Wild
24. Nashville Predators
25. Columbus Blue Jackets
26. Nashville Predators
27. Winnipeg Jets (2nd version, formerly the Atlanta Thrashers)
So the only existing teams that have never been the Blackhawks Division (either in their current city or a previous city for that franchise are:
1. Ottawa Senators
2. Buffalo Sabres
3. New York Islanders
4. Washington Capitals
5. Florida Panthers
6. Anaheim Ducks
7. San Jose Sharks
