Not going to happen. The Cubs have indicated they want to stay close to the luxury threshold so it's unlikely they sign a $40 mil per year player especially when they'll have their own players to pay.

While i think it's unlikely, you can't underestimate a guy taking a huge pay cut to play where he wants. Think the bigger question may end up being overall fit because as I've said before I'm not as convinced as some are that Heyward bolts. The fact that someone like Harper is saying he wants to play for the cubs is a good sign of how players feel about the organization. But if Heyward does bolt and if Harper is willing to play for say $30 mil a year you're really only adding about $5 mil a year over what Heyward will cost. I can't imagine Harper fitting in LF if Heyward stays because that's just too much money.

If he looking for no less then 40 mil. Then maybe no chance..
But
Luxery tax will be over 200 mil by 2019..
Besides Bryant and Rizzo not sure right now which of these other kids will still be with team come 2019 and will demand a high yearly salary by then, they'll still be in Arb years.

Bryant can still be sitting in his Arb years up til 2021..

Outside of locking down a SP or two and Rizzo between now and then, they have control of their payroll going forward.


Heyward who can opt out after 2018 or 2019..

21 mil 2020
21 mil 2021
22 mil 2022
Not too over the top if he stays..

Those are the only 2 locked up past 2019 and their salary combined actually goes down 14 mil+ in 2020 and 24 mil combined in 2021..


So, if there is actual strong interest for him to come here and Theo wants him , both sides can make it work ..

Plus cubs will be getting their tv deal by then ..

He could also be using the Cubs to jack up his price. Feigning interest from teams like BoSox, Yanks, & Cubs that have money to spend tend to help guys earn.

I think he'll end up a Yankee or a Phillie. Both teams have been watching him closely for a long time and both will have big money to spend.

I'd be sorta surprised actually if he goes to the Yankees. They seem like the antithesis of his personality what with their anti fun no facial hair rules. If he's going to a bigger market team LA probably makes sense be it LAA or the dodgers. Just saying Harper and Trout playing on the same team with 6 other terrible players would be interesting to watch.

Its accepting making enough money to pay the luxury tax or wanting to make all the money and stay out of the luxury tax.

The Pujols deal has already bitten them in the ass. I think that team has screwed baseball by having it's best player on a perennial loser.
