This would be good news for the cubs as they are unable to sign anyone over $300k until next july though this sorta signing would presumably be done the following winter.

If he waits one more year it would make sense for him to wait two when he can get the big bucks. On another note why does the MLB site continue to spell his name Ohtani when every others shows it as Otani. Just curious.

This could keep the Cubs in a 1 year rental solution.

You know that you will have Lester, Q and Hendricks. Tseng is most likely taking over the 5. That really leaves a spot open.

If the Cubs are smart then they offer Jake Arb. He bails they get Comp then they can look into a 1 year deal on the market.

Thinking Chris Tillman. 1 year deal to build up value again.

Even then dat 2018-19 market

Carlos Carrasco (32) — $9MM club option with a $663K buyout
Patrick Corbin (29)
A.J. Griffin (31)
Cole Hamels (35) — $20MM club/vesting option with a $6MM buyout
Jason Hammel (36) — $TBD mutual option
J.A. Happ (36)
Matt Harvey (30)
Scott Kazmir (35)
Clayton Kershaw (31) — can opt out of remaining two years, $65MM
Dallas Keuchel (31)
Tom Koehler (33)
Jeff Locke (31)
Brandon McCarthy (35)
Tommy Milone (32)
Charlie Morton (35)
Drew Pomeranz (30)
David Price (33) — can opt out of remaining four years and $127MM
Garrett Richards (31)
Hyun-Jin Ryu (32)
Ervin Santana (36) — $14MM club/vesting option
James Shields (37) — $16MM club option with a $2MM buyout
Drew Smyly (30)
Edinson Volquez (35)
Adam Wainwright (37)
Travis Wood (32) — $8MM mutual option with a $1.5MM buyout

They'll offer a QO but Arrieta won't take it. I think someone gives him years in the $130 to $150 mil range. He actually laughed at the idea of a one year year deal when asked the other day. I think Cobb might be a guy with upside they could sign. Then as you say I think Tseng, Butler and Montgomery will fight it out for 5. I'm hoping Butler puts some serious work in this offseason. I think he still has a lot of potential but he wasn't ready yet after being screwed up in Colorado.

I know he won't take it. Age is working against him. But the whole 200 mil man is over the top. 120 is more legit.

Still you get the pick and move on.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Cubs offer Jake arb, lose him, then trade for Verlander for no cost (meaning they foot the bill). I think the Cubs knew that taking on Verlander this year was weird but it makes a ton of sense for 2018 and 2019. His velocity should be enough to get through lesser lineups and he'll likely be a good arm as a bridge to Otani, who likely comes over the summer after Verlander expires.

So this would be 2018/2019

Lester
Quintana
Verlander
Hendricks
Tseng/Tyson Ross (no doubt the Cubs throw him a pillow contract greater than anyone else willing to)
Extra guys: Butler, some arm they're going to sign or trade for ala Butler, Alzolay (late 2018), Hatch (2019), Steele (late 2019)

Then in 2020, when Verlander is expiring and they have a year left of Q, Hendricks, and Lester, they go all-in for Otani to replace him and then you're hoping 2021 looks like

Otani
Alzolay
Three guys from the minors now or maybe a guy they get in a trade for a bat down the road or maybe a guy who pops.
