This goes out to all the Jimmy Garoppolo worshipers who can’t stop praising him, enjoy...

To the question in the title, the short answer is no, at least not yet. Late last season, Matt Barkley came in to start for the Bears and engineered some miraculous comebacks. He was almost consistently hitting clutch deep throws, even with pressure in his face and a bunch of no name WR’s dropping balls twice a quarter. The problem with Barkley was that he had a fatal flaw. He had a gunslingers mentality without the gunslingers arm. Too many times under pressure he would chuck the ball up for grabs down the middle of the field. His body and mind just did not match.

Watching Jimmy Garoppolo this season has reminded me of Mr. Barkley. Just like Barkley, Garoppolo has shown he can make accurate throws while taking a hit. He also looks to have a knack for comebacks, driving his team downfield late in games. While Garoppolo has not converted as many deep downfield passes as Barkley, he excels in leading his WR’s with his passes leading to huge yards after catch.

But Garoppolo also has a very serious flaw, and only time will tell if it becomes fatal. Garoppolo struggles considerably with any passes to either sideline. All his damage comes down the middle of the field, on quick slants, or to his first read on designed roll outs. His deep ball is truly atrocious. Yet Garoppolo seems to have a little of that cursed gunslinger mentality anyway.

Far too many times while under pressure, Garoppolo literally just throws the ball up for grabs. Fortunately for him, he’s been beyond lucky that defenses have time and time again not been able to capitalize on any of these horrible decisions.

The only difference between Barkley and Garoppolo currently is the fact that Barkley’s WR’s dropped his passes and defenses caught his mistakes while Garoppolo’s WR’s have caught his mistakes and defenses have dropped them. If JG continues to play like this, he’s in for a rude awakening. Here are some examples of what I mean after watching his condensed game clips on gamepass...

The moment Garoppolo feels any type of pressure here, he immediately panics and throws it right to the defense. Inexcusable decision from a veteran QB...

Completely clean pocket, one on one coverage deep, but JG throws a terrible deep ball that should have been intercepted.

JG has tons of time and a clean pocket, but badly misses the wide open TE deep down the middle of the field. TE saves it from being an INT. 20+ yard passes are an adventure for JG...

JG is pressured and completely panics again, throwing it up for grabs in the open field...

Here is a deep sideline pass that floats in the air for so long that the 1 deep safety is able to recover and get his hands on the ball...

Down by only 3 points in the red zone late in the game, and JG yet again throws a grenade up into the air under pressure...

Clean pocket and 1 on 1 coverage down field, and JG unloads an atrocious mortar bomb in and out of the arms of the defensive back...

Stares down the WR, and then throws it right to the safety. This should have been an easy pick 6, but it was thrown so badly it surprised the defensive back...

Here is a 12 yard completion from JG, yet it’s one of the worst decisions I’ve ever seen a QB make. Not even Deshone Kizer would ever think to do something like this. It literally looks like JG is throwing a sandbag up into the air...

Up by 10 points in the red zone, and JG decides to throw a dying wobbly fish across his body right into the middle of the end zone. I don’t think I’ve ever even seen Cutler do something like this...

First down deep in the opponents territory only down by 1 point in the closing minutes of the 4th quarter, and JG throws a rainbow into the clouds that lands right into and out of the CB’s hands. Truly an awful throw and an even worse decision...

Clean pocket and wide open WR deep down the sideline, but JG struggles hitting targets down field...

JG telegraphs this pass. Easy pick 6 if it doesn’t go through the linebackers hands...

Trying to force a throw in the end zone between double coverage, right through the DB’s hands...

Some awful mechanics in those throws. That dropped interception versus Tennessee was very Cutler-esque

I don't think arm strength is the barometer of QB play. He's also stronger than when he came out. His deep ball is better as well but not great by any means and he needs to be clean to have a shot. You can still throw outs with good anticipation. All that said, Trubs is easily a better prospect on draft day with more arm strength and downfield accuracy. Whether he ever matures to the point JG is now remains to be seen but it's looking like he should be at least as good long term.

I do think that critique is a bit severe but it remains to be seen what happens if teams man the middle with safety help and allow the edges one on ones. It's sort of the same thing I was waiting for with Watson but obviously a different scheme. If a team could find the right D formula and see if the QB could adjust. It's likely to happen to both of them and then we'll know more as other teams follow a blueprint. I suspect both will still play well but the question becomes whether they continue to look special.

Mitchell's only limitation is his head due to, hopefully, lack of experience and what he has to work with. The line today was a disaster and we know about his catchers. Even Wright and Inman were dropping balls today. Not excuses because lately there hasn't been much to excuse. He still seems to be maturing and it's an awesome sign. He's not perfect. Far from it but he already looks like he belongs.

When most rookies face adversity, adversity wins and they hit the rookie wall. Trubs grabs the bit and pushes through.

Not gonna lie, theres a lot of bad throws in those clips that are fortunate not to be interceptions.

Yes, Garoppolo is better than Barkley, and I don't see how the OP proves that Barkley is better than Garoppolo at all. You're essentially saying that because Garoppolo shares similar traits with Barkley, yet gets bailed out more than Barkley.....that somehow makes Barkley the better QB by default?

Or am I missing something and the proof lies in the gifs you posted? As if Barkley never made horrible decisions/throws. All those gifs tell me is that Garoppolo is flawed and far from perfect, not that Barkley is better.

Then of course there's the fact that Barkley is backing up Drew Stanton while Garoppolo is 4-0 despite being surrounded by players who had won only 4 games combined the previous 2 years before his arrival. It takes a lot more than being occasionally bailed out by a mediocre receiving core/occasionally poor DB play to pull that off. Yes Shanahan has been decent, but he only had 1 win as a HC before Garappolo. Plus, I'm not a fan of using the fact that a QB has competent coaches to discredit him when there's no evidence that said QB would be any less effective without said coaches, flaws and all. I think you're one of the better posters here but this thread had no business being made lol.

He's tongue in cheek about that part. He's sticking it to the JG faithfull who think he's the next coming. He's probably on a hot streak and will come back down to earth to merely good.

Both Barkley and JG started late in the year on new teams with new offense's. I really think with a full camp Barkley could have let us sit MT the full year. JG will only get better as he gets more games in that system. I still think MT will be the better QB in the long run.
