Mayor Rahm Emmanuel declared that a victory parade will be held Friday for the newly crowned 2013 Stanley Cup champions with a rally beginning at Hutchinson Field and Grant Park at 11 a.m. According to the mayor’s briefing, buses with the Chicago Blackhawks will leave from the United Center on a tour through the city at 10:30 a.m.
In a press conference Wednesday, Chicago Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy revealed more information about the events on Friday.
Entrances to the 45-minute rally at Grant Park/Hutchinson Field will only be in two locations on Michigan Avenue: Jackson and Congress. No coolers will be allowed inside the rally area. Bags and purses will be allowed, but subject to search.
McCarthy also urged Chicagoans to take public transportation and a representative from the Chicago Transit Authority said that trains service would be increased and buses through the affected area will be temporarily rerouted.
The Chicago Police Department, Fire Department and other local authorities plan to reopen the streets by the afternoon commute on Friday.
The parade after Chicago won the 2010 Stanley Cup was one of the single largest public events the city had ever seen. For this celebration, Metra will be providing $5 pass especially for Friday. No alcohol or bags will be allowed with riders on the trains.
