We take a look at three Chicago Bears legends
American Football is America’s most popular sport, and the favorite pastime of plenty of Americans, who enjoy, not just watching the sport, but also playing it with their friends and colleagues. There are plenty of American cities where Football is a huge phenomenon. It is, after all the biggest sport in the States, with 37% of the American population claiming it to be their favorite sport. One such city, famous for its sports-loving population, is Chicago, where one of NFL’s most popular teams, the Bears, hails from.
The Chicago Bears are one of America’s most popular, and best regarded football teams, with passionate fans, not just from Chicago, but from all over the country. They are darlings on the Novibet sports betting scene as well, being ranked sixth on a list of the Top 50 Favorite Football Teams in the United States.
Throughout the years, the Bears have seen some great players in their roster, and the team boasts the record for most Hall of Famers out of any other Football team, with 25 players enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The following are just a few of the best players for the Bears, and arguably, American Football in general.
Chicago Bears LB Dick Butkus
The greatest linebacker in his generation, and one of the greatest of all time, Dick Butkus is one of those players who are synonymous with their position. Butkus’ stature and athleticism made the opposing players of the time fear him, and he gave them plenty of reason to, with his hard hits. Many have compared him to a raging bull on the field, who hit hard, and took heads.
Dick Butkus has been met with plenty of honors and accolades, including being placed ninth on The Sporting News’ best NFL players of all time, and fifth by the Associated Press. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and his No.51 jersey is retired.
Chicago Bears HC/TE Mike Ditka
Before being renowned as one of the best coaches the Bears have ever had, Mike Ditka played the field as one of the best blockers and pass catchers. His nickname on the field was Iron Mike, which he claimed came from his town of origin, a steel town in Pennsylvania, however, many believe the nickname also comes from his tough-as-nails attitude, and from his incredible skills as a blocker, who very rarely went down. He has won three Super Bowls as a player, and two as a coach. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988, making him the first tight end ever inducted.
Chicago Bears RB Walter Payton
Payton is considered by many to be the greatest running back in the game, and by some to be the greatest player of all time. He has held the record for most career rushing yards, touchdowns, yard from scrimmage, all-purpose yards, carries, etc. Even when the Bears were in a slump, Walter Payton was still carrying the team.
He has been given many accolades throughout his career, including two MVP awards. He is ranked as the fifth best player on the official National Football League website, and another all-time great, Mike Ditka referred to him as one of the greatest players in football history.
