Allen Robinson signing is big win for Ryan Pace

Ryan Pace and the Chicago Bears made a big move early Tuesday morning as Allen Robinson is expected to sign with the team pending a physical.

Robinson’s deal is an estimated to be for three-years and $42 million with $25M of that guaranteed.

The signing is big for second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky as he now has a true number one wide receiver, but the signing is, even more, bigger for the Bears general manager who was in need of winning a big move especially after the last few off-seasons.

Heading into this off-season, Pace did not hide the fact that the Bears main goal was building the offense around Trubisky and providing him with the best offensive coaches and weapons for the 2018 season. He was able to sign what many believed to be the best free agent wide receiver on the market making a statement to his seriousness in rebuilding the team’s offense going forward.

Last season, the team lost their best wide receiver to free agency as Alshon Jeffery chose to sign with Eagles, later helping them to win the Super Bowl.

The loss of Jeffery was made even more significant as players who the team chose to replace Jeffery with did not live up to fruition. Receivers Victor Cruz, Markus Wheaton, and Kendall Wright were signed to fill the void, but only Wright would have a respectable season. Cruz did not even make the opening day roster, and Wheaton was sidelined with multiple injuries and finished with just three catches.

From an overall free agency outlook, the Robinson signing restores confidence that Chicago can be a premier destination for top-tier free agents. Last season, cornerback Stephon Gilmore and A.J. Bouye chose to sign elsewhere even though the Bears offered more money.

It shows that the Bears have more to offer than they did last season when it comes to possibly contending in 2018. The team has young, promising quarterback and a new head coach that has a proven track record of calling plays and has been apart of a coaching system of success.

The Robinson signing is the base for what the Bears do in the rest of free agency as they now have addressed their biggest need at their weakest position from last season. With a significant amount of cap space left after the signing, it is intriguing to see whether Pace and his staff will make a few more big signings or just a lot of mid-tier signing to address their needs.

Regardless of what they do, they are off to a big start being able to obtain one of their biggest targets and priorities in free agency as this is the biggest free agent signing for the team since the 2010 signing of defensive end Julius Peppers.
