According to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks have interest in Chicago Cubs’ outfielder Nate Schierholtz. Morosi did not mention if there have been trade talks yet and if there was anything to them.
Last season, the Cubs signed Schierholtz to a bargain 1-year/2.25 million dollar contract. And for the price, Schierholtz did not disappoint. He was one of the Cubs best hitters last year in the first half and played good defense. Last season, Schierholtz hit .251 with 21 home runs, 69 runs batted in, 29 walks and struck out 94 times. The 21 home runs was a career high for Schierholtz.
Schierholtz is in his last year of arbitration eligible and could make anywhere between 4-5 million on a 1-year contract. As you can see, that’s not a lot of money and why the Diamondbacks have interest in him.
The Cubs do not have the mindset of trading Schierholtz and would have to be overblown to do so. If the Cubs are not overblown by an offer, he will be the Cubs right fielder come opening day 2014.
Could the Cubs make the trade bigger? The Diamondbacks have been interested in starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija since last season. The Diamondbacks could be interested in trading for Samardzija this off-season. This is a possibility, but I just can’t see it.
As for just Schierholtz going to the Diamondbacks, I don’t see a trade happening. With the Cubs asking for too much from the Diamondbacks and the Diamondbacks balking at the price.
