After being selected by the Bears in the 2010 Supplemental Draft with a seventh round pick, Unga’s season is over before it started. He sustained a hamstring injury in training camp, but the severity of it is unknown. However, it was likely a torn hamstring that would’ve sidelined him into the season with the length of his absence from training camp.
Though this could’ve been a minor injury, and the Bears stashed him on IR so he could learn the offense, spend the season developing, and the Bears can use his roster spot for another player or RB. It would be similar (Or a carbon copy just at another position on the other side of the ball) to the Henry Melton injury last season. Melton sustained a minor ankle injury in the 2009 Preseason, and the Bears stashed him on IR so he could develop and keep another D-Line man.
He was competing for the third RB spot along with special teams ace Garrett Wolfe and late season flash in the pan Khalil Bell, but the Bears were also trying to make him into an H-Back (A TE that lines up in the backfield, like a hybrid fullback) in Mike Martz’s system.
This will go down as a redshirt season for Unga, and Bears fans (Though especially Jerry Angelo and Lovie Smith) can hope that the big, versatile back can bounce back and contribute next season. Whether he plays RB, FB, or H-Back next season has yet to be determined.
