The Chicago Bears made an under-the-radar free agent signing to bolster the secondary today, securing former Houston Texans safety Quintin Demps to a 3-year, $13.5 million deal ($4.5 million per year).

Last year, at age 31, Demps recorded one of the highest tackle totals of his career (55) and notched a personal best 6 INTs, helping anchor an underrated Texans secondary.

Statistically, at least, Demps has been playing stronger football now than in the earlier portion of his career, though the soon-to-be 32-year-old is on the back end of his career at this point.
Still, he represents an immediate upgrade over the current Bears safeties, especially in the takeaway department, and will be a valuable mentor to the young players on the roster and potential draftees in the secondary.
It might not be the signing we expected—or even the Houston Texan we were looking for (A.J. Bouye), but it could turn out to be a solid signing nonetheless.
