The Chicago Bears have wasted no time today in trying to build a better offense for quarterback Jay Cutler. As reported early in the day, the Chicago Bears signed former Giants tight end, Martellus Bennet. Just about two hours later, the Bears have also signed for New Orleans Saints left tackle Jermon Bushrod. The exact numbers of the contract are still unknown but it will be a five year deal.
The 6″5, 315 pound left tackle will be a big upgrade for the Bears offensive line which has been ranked in the bottom of the league for the past couple of years. Bushrod spent his first six years in the league with the Saints, starting in 62 games. The move also make sense for the Bushrod and the Bears because he played under new Bears offensive coordinator Aarom Kromer in New Orleans.
With the two big signings on Tuesday, the Bears will probably be looking to cut a few players to free up some more cap space. The first player gone in my opinion will be TE Kellen Davis. The Bears should favor Matt Spaeth over Davis because of Spaeth’s blocking ability. Another player that could be under the microscope is Devin Hester. The once electrifying return man was basically non existent for the Bears last year and Eric Weems could be a solid replacement and save the Bears a couple million. Also, the Bears may try to sign Henry Melton to a long term deal. Despite signing the franchise tag today for $8.45 million, if the Bears could work out a deal, they could free up some more cap space.
