The Bears informed Brandon Manumaleuna that he was being released shortly after agreeing to terms with free agent Matt Spaeth.
Manumaleuna signed a five year deal in 2010 and received $6 million up front. Offensive coordinator Mike Martz, who had coached Manumaleuna in St. Louis, lobbied for the team to sign the big blocker.
The move didn’t quite work out like the team hoped, as Manumaleuna got off to a slow start because of a knee problem. His weight also was an issue. After the season, the 31-year old had another knee surgery.
Spaeth, a former Steeler who agreed to terms earlier in the day, is expected to take Manumaleuna’s role as the blocking tight end. The snaps Manumalenua took as a fullback might be divvied up to other players. Holdover tight end Kellen Davis also is expected to get more snaps.
